I don't know what this VDM stands for? anyone on the list know? Samuel Reed, Minister, Presbyterian, Three Springs & Flats. I'm not sure what the * is next to the 1st page #. I checked some of the census index's & here are the Newell's that I found listed for you.. In the 1840 census Brooke Co VA index; 1 John Newell listed on p. 8 1850 index Hancock Co VA; 1 John Newel p. 311 1860 Hancock Co WV: Hugh 32 yrs old on p. 974 & John age 64 on p. 959. 1870 Hancock Co WV: Hugh 588, John 586 John B. 586 1880 Hancock Co WV: Bentley 56, Hugh 58, John 56 The Hancock County Building & Loan Association of Chester recd a charter from the State of WV on Dec 31, 1899 with Hugh Newell as Pres & C.A. Smith as VP who became the PRes upon the death of Mr. Newell in 1904 & was succeeded by John E. Newell, son of Hugh Newell in 1906.. The first loan was made March 13, 1900 for $1,000.00. (didn't say who to-kd) In 1935 ther firm obtained a federal charter.
