    3. Someone kindly sent me the name and phone number for the historian of the Geer family association and I called her. I've sent her the inheritence receipt in the hope that she can read the name. What's interesting in your message is that they lived in West Virginia. I can't find anything more than the information about the marriage to Elizabeth Maxwell. He shows upon in one Ohio census if I recall correctly. We certainly have Maxwells in the panhandle! And, it's the right timeframe. But the first name certainly doesn't look like Heber to me! Thanks for all your help - I think you're the one who sent me the name of the historian. 3. [For Josette, in particular]: I think this is the second inquiry I've had about an Elizabeth Maxwell whose name shows up in "Index III" of the Geer Genealogy book referenced in an early message by me. In following up on this second inquiry, I realize that I HAVE a copy of page 152, on which Elizabeth Maxwell's name appears. (I made a copy because I am related to another person on this page!) The entry in which Elizabeth's name appears is at the bottom of the page and reads as follows: " #633 Heber Geer was born on the Delaware River in Pennsylvania in 1800; died in 1863; married in 1825 Elizabeth Maxwell. Lived at Oak Run, W. Va." Making allowances for the flourishes in handwriting of the day, I hope you may recognize your "Co...er" or "Lo...er" as "Heber." (What fun!) A very little of the next page was captured in the copy, and appears to say that this couple had one son whose name starts with "Harr". If you think this is your person, let me know and I'll try to locate some more info for you. Judith Mercer Tauber-Lovik Los Altos, CA

    3. Judith I've got an unknown female Maxwell who married someone whose signature looks like Geer. The first name isn't decipherable but it appears to begin with either Lo or Co and ends with an er. If you're ever looking at the index again, let me know if you find any unusual names like a Co---er or Lo---er Geer. Thanks Josette Maxwell

    3. (For Kim, in particular): The masthead on the Geer Family Association newsletter includes the notation :"Gear, Geer, Geere, Gere, etc." I don't know how "loose" people want to be about variations that being with "Gr". There are 3 indexes in this (information-packed!!) old book. I copied only INDEX III. It is prefaced with this remark: "In this Index will be found: (1) The names of all Geers who are not lineal descendants of GEORGE or THOMAS GEER. (2) The names of all Geers who, although lineal descendants of GEORGE or THOMAS, have not been included in the two preceding indexes. (3) Other surnames occurring in this book." I find it very interesting that there is not a single "Greer" in this index. And, there are no Ralstons listed. Incidentally, the Geers of interest to me ARE in this book, and they are well represented in Hancock Co. WV and environs. Judith Mercer Tauber-Lovik Los Altos, CA

    3. People who are interested in the Geer surname should know about the "Geer Family Association." They publish an impressive quarterly newsletter of (current) family information/queries/etc., and collect generational updates to the the book of Geer genealogy published in 1923 by Walter Geer. The title of this book is "The Geer Genealogy -- A Historical Record of George and Thomas Geer and Their Descendants in the United States from 1623 to 1923." (This book is available from the LDS lending library.) Strangely enough, the name on the spine of the book I saw is "Greer." (?!) When I corresponded with the Association in 1997, Ginger M. August was their Historian, and was very helpful in looking things up. (But there was a VERY long turnaround time; be patient.) I copied part of a name index from the 1923 book, and it shows that Elizabeth Maxwell is mentioned on page 152. 3. I've got lots of Maxwells in the panhandle of West Virginia (brooke/hancock) early on. We go back to Henry Maxwell m. Agnes Carson Adams County PA c. 1752. Thomas and Robert Maxwell are in the Panhandle 1790s, John and James (brothers of Thomas/Robert) most probably there as well. Henry and Agnes had 48 grandchildren who were all in the Wash PA/Panhandle/Eastern Ohio area; all were born between 1777 and 1810. Are there any connections to Maxwells on the list? 3. Thanks very much for posting the information Alma. I'm looking for a Greer or Geer who married a Maxwell. The signature of the Greer on the receipt for an inheritance is beyond my ability to decipher but it looks like an Lother or something as a first name and a greer/gier/geer as last name. If you come up with any Greers who have a unusual first name beginning with an L or C, let me know! JOsette Maxwell Boonoe NC

    3. Hello, Just had to post a note on a Sarah Greer who was in the area too- maybe chance kin of your John Greer??? Sarah was mentioned in the Beers history of Washington Co PA The article says Sarah Greer of Harlem Springs Carroll Co OH married Joseph Ralston s/o Joseph (& Jane ?), of Kings Creek, Brooke Co VA, We think they married abt 1813-1814 or so? but can't find marriages record* Sarah was listed as 65 yrs old in the 1850 census b. in MD living with her son Jeremiah Ralstons & wife Jane Brice. We don't find a Sarah of age 75 in the 1860 census so she had died between those yrs & buried at the Three Springs Cemetery with Joseph Ralston who d. in 1843, his first wife Beers listed as Ann McCready d/o Joseph McCready of Hookstown, Beaver Co PA (but at death of Joseph McCready his will was listed in Washington Co PA..) We can't find Ann & Joseph's marriage record either?? ** Any info on the early Greers in the area would be treasured. What chuch did your Greer's belong to? Thanks for sharing your post.
