    1. The Past First Lady, BARBARA PIERCE BUSH and her Jefferson County Roots
    2. Julia A. Krutilla
    3. With President Elect, George Walker Bush's inauguration today, I thought the following item might be interesting to our local family researchers. The Jefferson Co., OH and area surnames associated with this family are ADAMS, CASSELLI, COE, CRAINE, CUNNINGHAM, GLADDEN, HOWELL. Some of you might actually be watching your cousin sworn in as the 43rd president and not know it. °´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø,¸¸,ø*°´°*ø THE PAST FIRST LADY, BARBARA PIERCE BUSH and her Jefferson County, Ohio Roots As residents of the Ohio Valley which prospered from the Industrial Revolution of the 20th Century, we often overlook the importance as it opened it's doors to land development in 1797. JEFFERSON CO., OH has many politicians and prominent citizens with roots in our county. The 28th U. S. President, Woodrow WILSON, and Abraham LINCOLN's Secretary of War - Edwin M. STANTON, to name a just a couple. But how many of you realize that our past 1st Lady, Barbara PIERCE BUSH is another individual to add to this list with a local Revolutionary Ancestor as well? She has two sets of 4th great grandparents who purchased adjoining land in Island Creek Twp., Jefferson Co., OH in 1799. One set of ancestors are Mose COE & wife, Sarah HOWELL who owned land in both Washington Co., PA & Island Creek, Jefferson Co., OH. Their known children mentioned in Mose's 1813 will - include Benjamin, Moses, Phillip, Daniel, Esther, Jennet, Mary and Sarah. An interesting line in his will hints at problems with his son-in-law and states, "bequeathed to Esther's children . . .. . . with her having the use of it so that Daniel CRAINE can not get any of it". Moses and Sarah spent their later years in the homes of their married children. And more importantly, Mose COE is listed in the Centennial Edition DAR Patriots Index –as an Ensign in the PA Line. Other COE Veterans of Western PA listed include Benj., Ebenezer, & Stephen. The "20th Century History of Steubenville and Jefferson Co., OH" mentions a Benjamin COE who tenderly cared for a wounded Confederate Soldier, by the name of W. G. PAGE during MORGAN's raid through Jefferson Co. in the summer of 1863. After the soldier recovered under Benjamin's care, he took the oath of allegiance for the North. Barbara's other early set of pioneer ancestors in Jefferson Co., OH were Joseph & Rebecca GLADDEN. Joseph died in 1833 and is buried at Two Ridge Cemetery. This cemetery is just west of Wintersville, near junction of St. Rd 43 and 646. We know that Rebecca outlived him as she is mentioned in his 1833 will, and assume she is buried in an unmarked grave next to her husband, Joseph. Their children - Madison, Joseph, the Rev. Aaron, William, Solomon, David, John, Elizabeth w/o Samuel ADAMS, Hannah CUNNINGHAM, Mary COE, Drusilla CASSELLI, and Lodema are all named in Joseph GLADDEN's will. The children and ancestors of Barbara BUSH's from these two families were Mary GLADDEN born in Jeff. Co., OH in 1804, and Daniel COE born Wash. Co., PA in 1801. Daniel followed the old custom of marrying the girl next door in Island Creek! And soon after their marriage in 1822, they moved to Allen Twp., Union Co., OH where they lived out their years. Daniel died in 1851 at the young age of 50, and Mary out living him by 42 years and passing over in 1893 at the age of 89. The lineage to Barbara PIERCE BUSH: are - Daniel & Mary COE's daughter, Sarah who married John W. ROBINSON. Sarah & John's son, James E. ROBINSON married Lulu FLICKINGER. James and Lulu's daughter, Pauline married Marvin PIERCE – who were the parents of Barbara PIERCE BUSH. You can find this article at it's permanent location at the Jefferson County Chapter, OGS web page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohjefogs/BarbaraPierceBush.htm

    3. Posted on: Hancock County, WV Query And Surname Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hancock/417 Surname: crist ------------------------- Hi Linda, MY goal this year to TRY MY BEST to DOCUMENT- DOCUMENT DOCUMENT...& **stuff you find on the internet most of all... Most pages will give you the source of the info..(if they are good sites they will) then go to the orginal record to find out for sure what info is there.. Make note of all info-& WHERE YOU GOT THE INFO AT, it might not be a clue now but later it might fit with other info & answer some questions for you. What year was the census info you found from? where was this census taken? Was it in Hancock? looks like this William was born in OHIO so you might want to check census indexs there for your surname too. You might check for the info on each of the 1850, 1860,1870 census to find out more about the marriages you listed- & see if you find them with kids listed at home. If you find them in the census you note the area & focus on that to find more, what churchs did they attend, check church records too. My State Historical library has census indexes from most states so first check them in the areas that you think your family lived in-& then lookup the info on the actual census & make note of their neighbors too..sometimes that helps to know who they were, some moved with each other from place to place, some married each other so look at them for possible inlaws.. Also names on land deeds are often related so watch for those too. Most of our ancestors had land so check for land deeds or land records too they often mention the wifes name. You might find listed on the deed, such as Joe Crist from Washington Co* PA bought land from jack frost in 1855 in Brooke co VA, sometimes you get lucky when you check the orginal records. I didn't see any listings on Crist in the WV Will estate settlements index for Brooke Co, & think it covers up to 1850 & I don't see the name listed in the index for The history of Hancock co WV by Jack Welch. Sorry don't have much more to check on your surnames for you. Hope some of this helps. Happy Trails, Kim Ralston Dresser searching from Okla
