Posted on: Hancock County, WV Query And Surname Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/WV/Hancock/10455 Surname: Best, Loesser ------------------------- John Henry Best was born in West Virginia, probably in Chester, Hancock Co. in 1881. He died in Berkshire, NY in 1962. His mother was born Rosa Loesser. She came to the United States from Alsace-Lorraine (then Germany, now France) when she was 18, exact year unknown, probably in the 1870s. She had 3 siblings: Julia, John, Vincent. She married Henry Best. They had 3 other children: Mary Catherine, Anna (died in infancy), Wille (died in infancy) and eventually moved to Ohio. I have found what I believe is my Rosa Loesser Bests death information in the Ohio Death Certificate Index. It states: Best, Rosa, Date of Death: 3/16/1916, County: Hamilton Does any one have any information about Rosa and her siblings? I am particularly interested in where and when she was born. I would also be interested in information about Henry Best. Thank you Sherry Palmiter

From the History of Hancock by Jack Welch, p. 53, "Prominent men in the new county met at Fairview on April 10, 1848 in the home of Samuel C. ALLISON to establish the county government. John PITTENGER, David PUGH, Andrew HENDERSON, John GARDNER, David WYLIE, William H. GRAFTON and John MAYHEW were selected justices of the court. The court then selected John ATKINSON, Clerk; Robert BROWN, Proscecuting Attorney; Josiah A. ADAMS, Comissioner of Revenue; Thomas J. HEWITT, Surveyor. David WYLIE, Williiam H. GRAFTON and John MAYHEW were selected to execute the office of sheriff, and William H. GRAFTON and John MAYHEW were chosen to act as coroner. James COCHRAN and Alexander D. PUGH were appointed constables. A number of disputes arose over the formation of the new county. The first was the exact location of the border between Hancock & Brooke Counties. There is a legend that Thomas N. BAMBRICK, the Hancock representative to the Virginia legislature, had something to do with the final decision. Both Hancock and Brooke Counties wanted possession of the "Toll House" on Pittsburgh Pike which was located at the junction of the Cove Road and Collier Road. The line was to be surveyed from a point on the Ohio River, at what was known as Williams Rocks to a point joining the Pennsylvania Border." Mr. BAMBRICK is said to have met the surveyors as they were approaching the site for the surveying on a frosty morning in 1848 and suggested a trip to Steubenville. There he staged a party for the surveyors. Later in the day when the surveyors departed for Williams Rocks, they began at a point slightly south of the original point, thus giving Hancock County possession of the "toll house". "
Might there be someone with information of the family of Robert Wilkinson and Nancy McLane Wilkinson. These people are my ggrandparents. Robert Wilkinson was born in Beaver county, Pa in 1821. He married Nancy Ellizabeth McLane in Fairview, WV om 1849. Nancy was the daughter of Dr. John McLane, a physician in WV and in Ohio. She had a brother, Porter McLane, who was a WV physician. Any information would be gladly accepted. Thanks. BSkarshaug@aol.com

Hi again, Yes there were listings from the Flats Pres church in the book- Hancock Co WV Cemeteries- but no Maxwells listed in the book listings of this cemetery. Are there any other surnames I can check for in that listing for you? On the first of this cemetery listings it says; This was a Presbyterian Church Cemetery located about one mile south of New Manchester, WV. This town has been called Pughtown, Fairview & New Manchester. There are 3 cemeteries very close to New Manchester; The old Methodist, the Union, and the Flats. All are on the same road (Ferndale Road). The Flats is one of the oldest cemeteries in Hancock Co WV. The Flats (of Fairview).Presbyterian Church was organized in 1794. I looking for info on a few folks buried there too, a James Ralston d. 9-9-1864 at 58 & wife Angelina d. 1901 at 83 yrs. & a Alex R. Morrow d. 1876 at 56 & wife Ann Wilson Morrow d. 1880 I wonder if he is the Alexander Morrow who ran the hotel mentioned in my other note, his wife was listed as Sarah Wilson, could she be a Sarah Ann Wilson?? I know there was another Alexander Morrow in the area. Think the one I'm looking for was a s/o a James Morrow? & have more info in my notes here somewhere in the pile.. I have a Sarah Wilson who married a Alex Morrow, this Sarah's mother was Jane Ralston wife of William Wilson, Jane was living with them in one of the census listings 1850 or 60.. Would like to track down the childrens of Alex & Sarah Wilson Morrow. Subject: Fairview Hi Josette, from the book The History of Hancock Co WV by Jack Welch, p. 33 "In 1810 David Pugh located a large tract of land where Pughtown now stands. He considered this area a favorable site for a town and laid out 113 lots. He called his town New Manchester, but the post office that was established eight years later went by the name of Fairview." " The town expanded rapidly and by 1814, had a population of about 60 with several businesses. Two hotels, the Manchestor House (1812) and the Virginia House (1818) housed the visitors to the community. The Virginia House was operated by A. Kidd, then in turn by Samuel Connelly, Thomas Hunt, and Alexander & Sarrah Morrow." (** Could this last couple be? Alexander & Sarah Wilson Morrow? kd?) p. 37, "The other pioneer church was the Fairview Presbyterian Church at Pughtown, formerly known as the Flats Church. It was organized in 1794 by settlers coming from eastern PA, NJ, & CT. The original building was constructed of Logs and was located about one mile south of Pughtown. In 1808 a frame building was erected on the site. In 1839 a red brick buiding was constructed with a seating capacity of 600. In 1890 the Fairview Presbyterian Church was built and the old Flats building was town down." p. 54 drawing of the Hancock County court house & Jail, Fairview W.VA. p. 55, " The records were transferred to New Manchester where David Pugh quickly gave a plot of land for the court house. Construction was begun on the building & the seat of the county's official business was Fairview for the next 31 years when the county seat was moved for the last time to New Cumberland."
