    2. Dear List, Several people responded to my request for directions to the Flatts Cemetery. I would like to thank you all very much for the helpful and detailed directions. I should be able to find my way, thanks to all of you who wrote. I apologize for responding to the list instead of the individual, but I wanted everyone to know how helpful you all were to me, and I wanted to encourage everyone to please ask the list for any information you are looking for because it helps all of us in the long run (in my humble opinion!). I learn alot from reading responses to this (and other) lists. Thank you all for all that you do to help others. Sheryl

    1. C.A. Smith inducted to Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame

    3. Source: The Review Monday, May 21, 2001 (you can view the entire article at www.reviewonline.com and click on local news) 8 to be honored Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2001 EAST LIVERPOOL -- The 2001 Class of Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame Inductees is comprised of eight individuals worthy of recognition for their talents and contributions in their respective fields of endeavor. An outdoor ceremony honoring this year's inductees open to the public will be held at 1:30 p.m. June 24 at the downtown East Fifth Street facility. This year's enshrinement marks the first joint induction of a husband and wife with recognition of James A. and Margaret H. Locke of East Liverpool. Other inductees are Henry J. "Hank" Kuzma of Steubenville and Wellsville native John A. Venesile, Ph. D., now of North Royalton, Ohio. Four of this year's class of inductees, Dean Martin, PFC Melvin E. Newlin, C.A. Smith and William "Bill" Van Horne will be honored posthumously. (I have selected just the information on C.A. Smith) C.A. Smith One of the Upper Ohio Valley's most successful and colorful sons, Charles A. "C.A." Smith was born April 14, 1867, in Wellsville, the youngest of eight children of Alexander and Margaret Smith. At an early age, he went to live with the Alex Mahon family of the Arroyo area of nearby West Virginia. When about 17, he became interested in the oil and gas business while working as a water boy for a crew laying a gas pipeline in the district. Smith seemed to have been blessed with something of a Midas' touch at the launch of a colorful and varied career that spanned more than a half century, reaching into many phases of growth of the valley beginning in the 1890s. His interest in the oil and gas business prompted him to begin drilling operations in the McDonald, Pa., area. Constantly expanding his interests, he eventually acquired the Ohio Valley Gas Co., which he sold in 1898. In 1899, Smith began the development of what is now Chester, W.Va. Smith bought farms in the area to lay the groundwork for the community, named after an uncle, Chester Mahon. It was during the late 1890s that he launched Rock Springs Park as an amusement center, became one of the builders of the Chester-East Liverpool Bridge and started the East Liverpool-Rock Springs Railway. The bridge was opened in 1898. Linked with the growth of Chester, Smith established the South Side Water Co. about 1900 and paved the streets of what is now the upper part of Chester. In 1946, he sold the water company to the City of Chester. During the busy days of 1900, Smith also turned to the pottery industry. That year the Taylor, Smith & Taylor Co. was built in Chester, with Smith, his brother, W.L. Smith, and John Taylor and sons, the original stockholders. In 1903, Smith and his brother bought out the Taylors, keeping the controlling interest in the pottery. Also about 1900, Edwin M. Knowles constructed a pottery in Chester, and Smith became one of the original stockholders. Smith also was connected with what became the American Vitrified Products Co., which once operated in the East End. In 1914, Smith moved further into the transportation field, becoming the owner of the Steubenville, East Liverpool & Beaver Valley Traction Co., with headquarters in East Liverpool. The purchase of the traction company returned ownership of the Chester Bridge to Smith's hands. In 1938, he sold the bridge to the state of Ohio for $2,185,000. Smith also purchased the light and power rights in the Steubenville-East Liverpool area. Those interests were sold in 1917 to what became the Ohio Power Co. Partial abandonment of the trolleys started in 1935, and in 1939, the traction company went out of business. The Valley Motor Transit Co. began in its stead. Also that year, the Smith concern took over the East Liverpool-Newell run. Smith served as president and general manager of both organizations. To his death in October 1953, Smith remained active in Valley Motor operations. For the last 10 years of his life, Hillcrest Farms near Chester was Smith's principal interest. Hillcrest Farms took form in 1917. In 1919, Smith went into the Hereford cattle business and began producing champion stock. At the time of his death, Smith's herd numbered about 700 head and was considered one of the best in the United States. Hillcrest Farms produced the grand champion bull of the Chicago International Livestock Exposition in 1947, 1949 and 1951 and the grand champion female at Chicago in 1950 and 1951. Smith's prize bulls were frequently sold for record prices of the times. Apple growing also played a big part in Hillcrest's success. Of the farm's 4,000 acres, 1,000 were devoted to apples. Smith was married twice and had five children by the first marriage.

    3. Any HOLLOWAY descendants?? This was in Tues, 8 May, Springfield MO News Leader, p. 5B: Discovery of Cemetery Halts Roadwork-- Associated Press, Kansas City Construction of a new highway in south Kansas City has been halted by the discovery of a small cemetery dating back to the Civil War era. State officials are anxious to find any descendants of the Holloway family who are buried in the cemetery. If the heirs can't be found, the state will have to get court permission to move the nine graves in the plot, in order to finish a new Missouri 150. Construction workers recently unearthed a marble headstone, dating from 1858, while moving a large section of water pipe. Archaeologists later found another headstone and evidence of seven other graves. The site has not been disturbed further. -------- Please pass this on to other lists.

    3. Nu? What's New? News About Jewish Genealogy from Avotaynu Vol. 2, No. 10 - May 13, 2001 Gary Mokotoff, Editor ************************************************************ Expect Improvements to the Ellis Island Search Ability ====================================================== I have had e-mail correspondence with the professor of linguistics who designed the portion of the Ellis Island Database search engine that provides assistance when there isn't an exact match. He stated there will be significant improvements to the search engine in the next 30 days. He specifically stated that the current system's inability to recognize that surnames ending in -SKY and -SKI are synonymous is handled by his algorithm. Although he did not state it overtly, it appears that the Ellis Island people decided not to delay the opening despite that fact that all the software was not yet implemented. It would have been valuable to know this in the past few weeks, because part of the problem of the inaccessibility to the site is that frustrated researchers are staying online longer than normal trying other combinations of their surnames in a vain effort to locate records of their ancestors. The Ellis Island database is located at http://www.ellisislandrecords.org. A Little Bit of Ellis Island Humor ================================== One demonstration of the inadequacy of the current Ellis Island database (EIDB) environment is that there is already third-party software being developed to combat the shortcomings of the system. Edward Rosenbaum, president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Bergen County (New Jersey), is a computer analyst. He has developed shareware that provides possible alternate spellings of names that you cannot find in the EIDB. You can download it from http://members.bellatlantic.net/~elr228/eidb.htm. At the recent meeting of his society, when he announced the product's availability, someone added, "Yes, and the next thing we will have is a book titled 'An Idiot's Guide to the Ellis Island Database'." In a serious vain, as an alternative to "An Idiot's Guide...", I am writing an article for the Summer issue of AVOTAYNU titled "Strategies for Using the Ellis Island Database" that discusses ways of locating the records of your ancestors when the straight and narrow method does not work. It has been noted on a number of postings to the JewishGen Discussion Group that the EIDB organization is now accepting e-mail regarding errors discovered in the database. If you find what you believe to be a database error and wish to notify the Foundation, write to errors@ellisisland.org. In the subject line of the e-mail indicate the type of error encountered so they can channel it to the correct department. Choose from the following subjects: * Manifest error * Spelling error * Ship Image error * Other Database error ______________________________ Nu? What's New? News About Jewish Genealogy from Avotaynu Vol. 2, No. 10a - May 13, 2001 Gary Mokotoff, Editor ************************************************************ More Ellis Island Information ============================= Normally I wait the two weeks between editions of "Nu? What's New?" for information sent to me by subscribers. Stephen P. Morse of San Francisco has developed a valuable searching aid for the Ellis Island database that hopefully will become a permanent feature of some future update of their system. The EIDB system allows you to qualify the scope of your search in a variety of ways. You can qualify the search by Gender, Year of Arrival (range of years), Ethnicity, Age of Arrival (range of ages), Port of Departure (all ports for which there were hits on the initial search), and Name of Ship (all ships for which there were hits on the initial search). But you cannot make all these qualifications at the same time. Morse has developed a front-end for the search process that allows you to specify ALL your search parameters on a single page. It can be found at http://sites.netscape.net/stephenpmorse/ellis.html. It then submits your request to the EIDB. Errata ====== The e-mail address where you submit corrections to the data in the Ellis Island database is dberrors@ellisisland.org not errors@ellisisland.org. ______________________________
