Last week I was searching the cemeteries in Hampshire Co and came across an interesting site. At the Mt Bethel Cemetery in Three Churches, in a section with very old gravesites. I found the grave of Joseph McBride b.1830 d.1899 and wife Reuan 1834-1898; next to them is Eli McBride 1841-1927 wife Sarah E 1873 - (no death date) Next to Eli are Odis B McBride 1910-1913, Newton W McBride 1869-1952. There is a row of small stones with nothing but initials between them with only initials on them. As follows below: R Mc, A McB, Blank stone, B H Mc, P Mc, J A Mc, 4 more blank stones On examination of these McBrides, we find Odis is a son of Newton W(illiam), Newton is son of Joseph and wife Ruean Ganoe McBride. Joseph McBride is the son of Peter 1794 - 1884 who is buried at the Salem Methodist Cemetery in Slanesville WV. Peter is son of John A McBride, Sr c1757(married in 1777) - c1821 (estate settlement) and John is the son of Alexander (will probated 1795 Hampshire Co). Also, nearby is the grave of Isaac W McBride 1866-1951, he was son of Robert, the son John McBride Jr, son of John Sr, son of Alex d.1795. The stones (actually rocks with initials scratched on) between Joseph and Eli appear to be that of Alexander and some of his family or relatives. For example, I interpert them as follows: R Mc could be Robert b1762 d1850 son of Alexander A Mc appears to be Alexander c1730-d1795 The blank stone may be his wife or someone else. B H Mc no idea, unless it's the Benjamin d.1749 estate admin was his brother Francis* or a wife/daughter of one of the others (B=Betsy=Elizabeth??) P Mc probably the Peter that witnessed will of Alex in 1795 J A Mc would be the John Sr mentioned above. The A is probably for Alexander...at least 1 other John A McBride in his line and a John Alexander. *Extracted from Chalkeys "CHRONICLES OF THE Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia Extracted >From The Original Court Records Of Ausgusta County 1745-1800" Grant P.S. Got pictures of A McB and J A Mc stones and one of the whole group if anyone is interested. (Ran outta film!)
