These are [?] the 1st Baptists on the s Branch,Potomac, [?] by 1782 The Badgley Surname Message Board Message #35 Thursday, April 27, 2000 Subject:Reverend David BADGLEY Posted by:Nora Tocus Message:Reverend David BADGLEY was a Baptist minister who brought a colony of 154 people from Hardy CO VA (now WVA) to New Design/Kaskaskia IL in 1797. By some reports he was recruited by the American Baptist Mission Board to establish a Protestant church at Kaskaskia because young American soldiers, since the Revolution, were marrying French girls and entering the Catholic church at Kaskaskia, and the Baptist Mission Board wished to avoid this. In 1796 Badgley made an exploratory trip on horseback with several men and determined to bring a group of congregants, neighbors, and family members to settle in Illinois. They left Hardy CO in the spring of 1797 and arrived at Kaskaskia on July 4, 1797. This was a summer of torrential rains and flooding; much of the land was under water and as the group first took boats on the Ohio River to Massac then traveled overland through southern Illinois, the trip turned into a disaster. They then arrived at their destination to encounter an epidemic of "pestilential fever" which ki lled half of their party. Reverend Badgley survived to establish the first Protestant church in the Western Territories. Some of his party settled in Illinois while others returned to the East or to some point along the way back, believing (with some justification) that Illinois was a very dangerous place. Regarding a previous posting, I have not heard of the Badgley party stopping in KY but would be interested to hear details and documentation. Please contact direct Nora PS Much material is available on the history of BADGLEY in America---goes back to the arrival of Anthony Badgley in NY 1688.
