By serendipity I have finally found the parents of my g-g-grandfather, John Wesley Edwards, in a book by Maud Pugh, "Capon Valley, Its Pioneers and Their Descendants, 1698-1940." This book is not very scholarly, but finally I have something to follow up! By further serendipity, shortly after finding this info I was contacted by another Edwards researcher responding to an old query of mine--she turned out to be the g-g-granddaughter of John's brother Albert! Now I hope to find out more. Here is what we have: Robert Edwards, Sr. (son of William Edwards, who apparently was the son of the Joseph Edwards who build Edwards Fort near Capon Bridge in WV. I seek confirmation...) married Eve Hawkins on Nov. 26, 1826, in Hampshire Co. Their children: 1. John W. Edwards, b. 1827, married (March 12, 1855, Allegany Co.) Susan Fouty (one of 7 daughters of Jacob Fouty and Sarah Bonham). They apparently lived in the Westernport area until 1882, when they moved to New Creek/Keyser, WV. Two daughters, Ann Elizabeth and Ida Virginia. (My line, I have more on all these.) 2. Anna, "married a Carmichael and moved to some of the western states." 3. Nancy, m. M. Hare, and moved west. 4. James, m. Harriot ____, killed in Civil War. One child, James Jr., lived in Marysville, OH. 5. Mary, b. Feb. 9, 1831, d. Oct. 27, 1906, m. John W. Ely on Oct. 24, 1850, moved to Iowa (quite a bit more on this family in the book). 6. Albert, m. Mary Brewer May 21, 1863, in Tazewell Co., IL; d. Nov. 14, 1894, and is buried with his parents, Robert and Eve, at Lacross, Hancock Co., IL. (Ancestor of my newly discovered fourth-cousin) 7. George, moved west and nothing known. 8. Elizabeth, m. Isaac Grapes. 9. Robert Jr., b. Aug. 18, 1843, d. Aug. 17, 1929; m. Susan R. Funk and moved to Iowa. More on this family in the book, too. 10. Jane (in one place she is also referred to as Eliza Jane), m. Peter Largent. There is supposed to be a sketch of this family in Vol. 2 of Maud Pugh's book, which I don't have...But this book has quite a lot on their children. Many Kidwell connections, too. If any of this rings a bell with Edwards or Hawkins researchers, I would love to compare notes! I also don't mind doing lookups in this book, but you will have to be rather patient, since (1) there is no index! and (2) I am in the middle of moving from one continent to another...If you are researching Pughs or Offuts, you might want to consider BUYING this book. Martha, I did extensive research on the Edwards and Largent families in years past, but did not publish. Consequently, much of the information is scattered in various files. Here is an item that was published: James Allen Edwards (#4 child listed in your e-mail below) was drafted into the Confederacy and was killed by ambush in November 1863 while enroute home to visit his only son, James Allen Edwards Jr, who was born at Slanesville, WV on Sept. 9, 1863 and died Sept. 23, 1964 in Ross County, Ohio. James Jr. lived to age 101 and continued to visit relatives in Hampshire County into his late 90s. James Sr. married Harriett Shanholtzer (1845-1916), daughter of Philip and Emily (Hawkins) Shanholtzer. Harriett later married Quintus "Bull" Reed. She is buried on the family farm on Kedron Road, just west of Slanesville. Source: Shanholtzer History and Allied Family Roots of Frederick and Hampshire Counties, Virginia, by Wilmer L. Kerns, 1980, pp. 100-101 and 215-216. I probably have info. on each sibilng of James A. Edwards plus his antecedants, but it would require more time than I have available to dig it out.
