My ggg-grandfather was Joseph House JOHNSON, born in Hampshire Co, VA Mar 12, 1785 and died in Montgomery Co, OH Sep 26, 1834. Joseph married Mary Eve STOKER, daughter of John STOKER and Elizabeth CRITTON. Mary Eve was the granddaughter of Balzar STOKER, one of the original settlers near where the Little Cacapon River empties into the Potomac River about three or four miles upstream from Paw Paw, WV. Balzer served as a pilot for surveyor Elias POSTON, acting as a guide when the Little Cacapon Mountain 90-acre plot of land was granted to John CRITTON. Balzer received a Fairfax Grant of 232 acres on Apr 4, 1765, located along the Little Cacapon River near the Potomac River. Several years prior to this grant, Balzer had purchased 30 acres from John COX. I have not determined who Joseph House JOHNSON's parents were, but believe he was related in some way to John and Dianah JOHNSON in the Little Cacapon area of Hampshire County. John's will was probated Dec 18, 1809 in Hampshire Co. It names "daughter Mary HOUSE, James JOHNSON and John JOHNSON Jr." For more information on the Johnson/Stoker/Critton lines in Hampshire Co, VA, go to my web site at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/4023/ If you have any information regarding Joseph Johnson, please contact me.
