Mike, Good luck!! I understand from a close relative who lives in the county that the H. C. Historical Society is more a social club than anything. I have a cousin who lives in the south and sent the society a membership fee. Hearing nothing from them, he tried to contact them by phone and mail--they were totally unresponsive. He could not even learn who the president of this society was. When he visited the county to do research, they were unavailable. As we who research our roots there know, the area has a lot to offer historically; it's just a shame that its history is neglected by the very organization that should be working to preserve it. Except for a few scattered individuals, it seems that the only people really interested in Hampshire history are "outsiders"--us. I do wish you luck, however. The site of the fort would be a worthy place for a marker. Considering that there are people who stoop so low as to steal old gravestones, I would be almost willing to bet that the original marker is sitting in the home of some low-life who thought it would be a nifty thing to have for their very own.
