Susan ( ? ) Short was born on 3 May 1817 in Virginia. She married John Short ca1838-39 probably in Hampshire County, Virginia. He appears as a married male in the 1840 Federal census, with a wife and no children. Their first child, Mary Elizabeth Short, was born in July 1840, shortly after the 1840 census was taken in Hampshire County. This family appears in the 1850 Federal census taken in Hampshire Co., VA, on page 226, house/family #1167 Short, John age 40 shoemaker, wife Susan, age 35, and their five children. Susan A. Short was born on 3 May 1817 and died on 23 May 1894. She is buried by her husband in the Kump graveyard, at North River Mills in Hampshire County, WV.
