    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Civil War letters on-line, William Montgomery of Springfield
    2. Just came across something really nice that I wanted to share with anyone who hasn't seen it yet--there is a site about the 33rd VA Voluntary Infantry (Confederate), including Company A (Potomac Guards), which was composed mostly of men from Hampshire Co., in particular the Springfield area. One section has a number of original letters, diary extracts, etc., written by Civil War soldiers, and they are fascinating. Included there are several letters written by William Montgomery of Springfield (do you have these, Susan Tyson?), which mention a number of other Springfield residents--besides providing a interesting picture of the war in general. The originals are part of the WV Collection at WV University, Morgantown (you can see the catalog for this collection online at the WV U. site--lots of interesting stuff there), and in fact three days ago I had inquired about them (I'm interested in Springfield) while requesting a photocopy of something else, so this is real serendipity for me! Enough blather--the address for the letters is http://members.aol.com/Vir33rdreg/P57-198.html. The Company A site is http://members.aol.com/Vir33rdreg/P5-198.html. You can click your way to other interesting Civil War sites from there--I think I originally found this through the Civil War Home Page or something... Enjoy!
