    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] What "great debate?"
    2. Response to Roland, Message #5, 03 Sep 00; Hampsh-D- #251: My research and that of others shows clearly that 1) Michael Ernst (whom you seem to refer to as Michael Harness) always had the Ernst surname while living on The Tulpehocken; and 2) that his wife Elisabetha, had the surname Dieffenbach, of which Deffenbaugh was a later clerical corruption by non-German clerks; and that the Tevebaugh surname did not devolve until at least 30 years after Elisabetha and Michael were married; and 3) that Jurie and Blandina Westfall didn't even have a daughter named Elizabeth, and the Elizabeth Westfall in the Abel Westfall family was not born until ten years after the time of Elisabetha's and Michael's marriage. Not much left to debate? John Tevebaugh

    3. Hi --- I missed the first of this discussion, but my Aunt married a DEFFINBAUGH & the family was here in Allegany County in the mid 1700's, first I believe being Peter , & the name was DEVINBAUGH at one time--depending on who could spell better. Most spelled names like they sounded. Just like my Kifer line started in Germany as KEIFFER, went to KEIFER on my 3rd Greatgrandfather's stone, to KIFER on my Greatgrandmother's stone, & stands so today, although some choose the KEIFER spelling.
