Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hampshire?read=1300 Surname: Ely, See, Shaver ------------------------- Thank you for your response. I found in my own records today a sizable volume of research from a Mildred Edgarton with whom I had frequent contact on the surnames listed in the late 1980s. We lost contact, but she sent an Ely family group sheet which included, of course, my Coonrod See. It is his line from his father, George, and grandfather that I am searching. Some of the West Virginia Counties where I had found some of these names once had been Virginia, but I am appreciative of any correction needed. Thanks! JB
Jean, There were at least two distinct See families in western VA/WV from the 1750s on. One was headed by George and Margaret See who came to the South Branch Valley of the Potomac from the Tulpehocken Valley of Berks Co, PA. The descendents of this family still live in the South Fork, Lost River region of Hardy Co, while others moved west to Randolph Co, WV and southwest to Greenbrier and Kanawha Co. and onto Indiana, KY, MO, IL and IA and points west. The other See family was headed by Martin See, who lived near Maxatawny Twp in Berks Co, PA and were not related to George See family. He settled farther south in the Shenandoah Valley on the Calf Pasture River in 1773. From there his sons, moved west to KY and beyond. Coonrad was part of this family. The See List (See-L@rootsweb.com) is quite active and helpful and there are a number of descendents from both See families who may be able to help you.
