    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] The Stephen McBrides of Hampshire/Frederick Co.
    2. Grant McBride
    3. I've noticed several people inquiring about the family of Stephen McBride and Hannah Smith and mentioning this Stephen as the son of James McBride and Sarah Edwards. I believe this to be incorrect. Below is some of what I've found: Stephen, son of James McBride and wife Sarah Edwards James shows in Hampshire tax lists from 1782 - 1797 with only 1 male of tithable age (himself). In 1798 it shows him and 1 son aged 16+, which would put Thomas or James Jr born 1782. In 1799 he still has 2 tithables (himself and 1 son). In 1800 it shows 3 above 16 (himself and 2 sons) putting 2nd son born 1784. This continues until 1804 when son James Jr shows up on the tax lists and James Sr now shows 2 tithables. In 1805 James Sr shows with 1 tithable and son Thomas is now on the tax list. James Sr, in 1806, again shows 2 tithables and 3 in 1807, what appear to be sons James Jr and Thomas, still show the list (Stephen and possibly 1 other son who died young?). In 1810 he shows with 2 tithables (himself and 1 son) until 1811 when its just him as son Stephen shows on the tax list, placing his birth as 1790 (which corresponds with 1850 census where he is listed as aged 60). This Stephen McBride married Ruth Thompson, dau. of John Thompson and Martha Beard c.1810 Stephen McBride and wife Hannah Smith Stephen b. 1759 doesn't appear on tax list for Hampshire Co, but does in Frederick Co. Also, in 1806 this family moves to Ohio. No Stephen shows in tax list for Hampshire until 1811. This Stephen appears most likely to belong to the McBrides in Frederick/Loudoun Co. areas. Also, will of Elizabeth McBride 7/11/1824 mentions brother Stephen and his daughter Rachel. Stephen McBride b.1759 as far as I know didn't have a daughter Rachel as one of his 13 children. Another item, in the will of James Sr 3/15/1818 he states that son Stephen is to have use of the farm while his wife (3rd one, Mary Ashbrook)lived. Stephen b.1759 had been in Ohio for some time at this point. >From 10/28/1807 - 8/19/1808; 2/7/1814 & 8/20/1814 Land was conveyed to James McBride from Thomas Ashbrook and other heirs and legal representatives of Levi Ashbrook. 458 acres on the N. River of the Cacapeon. On 6/14/1831 John Hiett Executor of James McBrides Estate deeded the above 458 acres to Stephen McBride, the son of James McBride. This has pretty much convinced me that Stephen m. Hannah Smith is not the son of this James McBride. Grant McBride
