Hi, I was very interested in the email you sent on the MERRITTs of Hampshire Co. This is probably a "long shot," but have you found any connection to a DIXON, McCRACKEN, or OSMUN/OSMAN family in Hampshire Co.? The reason that I'm asking is this: My ancestor, John DIXON, had 10 children, including one named "Merit" or "Merritt." Since this name had not shown up in other lines, I was wondering if the name came from an ancestors' surname. In the next generation, another of John DIXON's sons, Willis, named one of his sons Merritt, also. If you have any inkling that there is a connection, please let me know. This line has been a real puzzle to me. And DIXON is my maiden name! Just to clarify the connection--John DIXON married Sarah (who was an illegitimate daughter of Cyrus McCRACKEN and ???). Marilea, I don't have any surnames or connections with Dixon, Osman, McCracken. I don't even recall seeing them as neighbors of the Merritts. Good luck on your search. I'm stumped about my orininal ancestor, too.
