    3. Many thanks for the replies re the location of the folks on the tax list of Arjalon Price. Patterson Creek I know. But where is Paddytown? I can't find it on my Hampshire County map, on the Mineral Co. Rootweb list of communities in that county, nor at USGS (except the Pa. Paddytown). I've pondered Cheryl's suggestion about listing some of the names from the list. The 1797 list covers 11 pages in the TLC publication of the tax lists--about 800-900 names, I estimate, so this will take a while....... Well, let's limit it to those taxed on 26 April: Andrew ARMSTRONG; Daniel ARNALD; Henry CLINE, John CLOSON?, Joshua COLLINS, John COOK, Nicholas CRAFAS, Jacob CREAGER, Adam CUNNINGHAM, Samuel & Thomas DOBBINS, James, James Jr and Patrick FLEEMING, Michael GALASBY, Aaron HALBERT, Ezekiel MARSH, George PEARY, Thomas SCARDING, Michael SCHEETZ, S. SHEPHARD, Henry & John SCHUTZ, William SMITH of Welch, Joseph SMOOTE, John STEWART, Alexander STRICKLIN, John STURMAN, Peter UMSTOTT, Peter UMSTATT Jr., William and WIlliam Jr VANDIVER, William VAUSE, John WAGGONER, John & Thomas WEAKES, Silvester WELCH, Francis WHITE, Peter & Richard WILLIAMS, David WOLF, Samuel THOMAS. Thanks again. Jim Funkhouser

Some badly misspelt, but that's hardly an issue. (g) Paddytown is in present-day Mineral county, and you'll probably find more pertinent help over on that mail-list (because people who live in present-day Mineral or who moved out after Mineral was formed will look there first). There is some disagreement over whether it was part of Keyser. 1797 is a little earlier than previous references to it I've seen, though. I haven't checked into it, because, frankly, Mineral's Michelle's turf, not mine. Some of the names in that list, I know as Hardy county names; a couple I know as Allegany co MD; a few are still in Hampshire; the others are all Mineral co. From that observation, I'd put Paddytown somewhere in the vicinity of Hampshire/Mineral/Hardy connection. DISCLAIMER: In no way did I intend you to copy the entire list. I was looking for a few names -- 10 or 12, maybe -- that would be more telling than only one. Good luck. 3. Paddytown is one of the early names for present day Keyser, Mineral County.
