Here are a couple of tips that have helped me. Pour plain bottled water over the tombstone lettering. This works particularly well on those brighter, white stones and sometimes helps with the older, darkened ones too. I always take a "dry" picture first, before I wet the stone down to take a "wet" one. A SOFT brush can also help improve contrast by gently removing buitl-up debris, especially in the crevices of the lettering. Do this BEFORE using water. While night pictures might well work, I have to agree with Wayne on night trips to cemeteries - sounds a bit too much like Blair Witch Project, Halloween and snipe-hunting all rolled into one to me! Hello I find that working and taking photos on an overcast day works well also. There is enough light to take a good photo but no shadows or glares to deal with. Kinda like taking them at night!! I also carry a "stone bag" as my son calls it. I have in there a pack of Carcoal crayons, a book of plain tracing paper, a note book and a few maps. I have used on one occation a carcoal crayon over a almost invisable stone and slightly wet it and rubbed my hand across it and wala the name appears. That takes a good photo also.
