Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hampshire?read=1163 Surname: Pickering, Posey ------------------------- Does anyone have, know where to find, or know how to get a lookup from a copy of this: EXCERPT FROM THE HAMPSHIRE COUNTY SITE A very few (about 17 individual issues) copies of "The South Branch Intelligencer" exist prior to December 1866. These issues, all in the 1836-37-38-39 time period, have been extracted by a local author, Vicki Bidinger Horton, and the extracts may be still in print. END EXCERPT My great-great-great Hiram Pickering was heading a household in Hampshire County, (then-)VA, in the 1840 and '50 censuses, as was his wife Sophia in the '60. Assuming death caused his absence from the '60, the presence of a 7-year-old child in the '60 household suggests Hiram died in or after '53. The '50 indicates Hiram was born in Virginia in '03 - but there were no Pickering households on an '05 Hampshire County tax list. A Hiram Pickering married a Sarah Ann Posey in Hampshire County in 1828, but my g-g-g gf's wife's name in '40 and '50 was Sophia, born in Maryland in the first decade of the 1800s (she was listed as 40 in '50 and 53 in '60). No Hiram Pickering household appeared in 1830, but there was one headed by a Benjamin Pickering. According to the '50 census, Hiram was a convict. Based on a gap in the ages of the children in his household, he may have been "away" between 1832 and 1838 - or, given the non-matching wife's names, maybe this was a period of widowhood.
