Does anyone know where I could find the early 1780-1812 Chancery Court records? The LDS library microfilm court records for Hampshire don't start until 1812. Are the earlier ones available in Romney at the courthouse? Thanks. Karen
Hi Karen, From HISTORY OF HAMPSHIRE CO., page 274, ""It was not until after the constitution of 1830 was adopted that any superior court" (of chancery) was held in Hampshire Co." Up until that time the district courts were held in Winchester (Frederick Co.). I found chancery court records for 1809-1821 for Hampshire Co. at the Virginia State Library in Richmond as a part of Frederick Co. VA court records. LDS may have them on microfilm.
