A few months ago I ran across a letter written in 1954 by Eva Lena (WARD) SWEARINGEN a great aunt of mine. In this letter she writes about her and her husband Ezra Swearingen's ancestors in Hampshire Co. I am particularly interested in the WARD family; however, I will quote a section in which she mentions several names in hopes that someone might see a connection and be able to help out with who the Mary WARD is that she mentions... I quote in part: Mr. Swearingen would help us out if he desired... But since his maternal Great-Grandmother was a WARD-- (I) Mary Ann Ward or Mary Jane - Married Thomas Nixon - among 10 or 11 children were (II) Richard Nixon married Mary Fogleman (II) Daughter married Hines (II) Jonah Nixon (she does not say who Jonah married) (III) (Jonah's) Daughter Rachel Ann married Wm Van Swearingen (IV) Ezra Herbert Swearingen Below this Eva Lena has drawn a line and then writes in two columns: 1st Column: I Ward Murdered (I) Mary Ann Ward Nixon - Brother and wife murdered.... (II) Jonah Nixon (III) Rachel Ann (IV) Ezra Swearingen married Rilla Green 1894 2nd Column: I Ward (I) Ward Brother of Mary and wife murdered (II) Thornton Able Ward born about 1815 married Elizabeth Ellen Crozier about 1847 (III) John Marshall Ward married Lydia Jane Fogleman (IV) John Harrison Ward ------- This John Harrison Ward is my grandfather, born in Cumberland Co, Illinois. This much I am certain of: In the WARD column for generations II, III, and IV, great aunt Lena is correct. What I do not know is the accuracy of her statements about the Nixon / Van Swearingen generations-- I have to take her at her word. My real question is this: Does anyone have ANY information about this Mary (WARD) NIXON, supposed sister of the WARD who was murdered? If so, does anyone know who this WARD might be? If you do, then you would be providing my family a missing ancestor we've looked for so long. I might also note here that I am uncertain as to whether this WARD family incident occurred while they were still in Hampshire Co (ca 1815) or that it happened after that when they'd migrated on to Ross Co, OH (ca 1820).
