I am planning to visit Hampshire County and surrounding area later this summer. I will be visiting Reese's Mill, Vanderlip, Romney, and Mechanicsburg Gap. My Taylor ancestors were from that area and I plan to visit the old home place, cemetery, and whatever historical resources are available. My 4th g/gfather was Daniel Taylor b. 1758, a vet of the Rev War. He is buried at Reese's Mill. His son Edward lived at Mechanicsburg Gap, and also his son Warner T. Taylor Sr until he migrated to Ohio in the early 1800's. I would appreciate any helpful hints that any of you may have about where I might find local historic reference material in Hampshire. Thanks, Phil Cartmille pcartmille@ohiohills.com
Hi! I don't know about Daniel or Warner T. Taylor Sr. But, I do know something about Simon D. Taylor. He was shown on the 1850 Census of Hampshire Co., Va. Also, living in the household was a Francis Mayberry who was my ggrandpa aka Frank Mayberry age 16 and a laborer. Also, his father Israel Mayberry and Mother Catherine Hass Mayberry were living in the county, to include 3 other siblings who were still living with the grandparents Peter & Mary Hass. Apparently, Catherine the mother had died previous to the 1850 Census causing the family to be split apart. My gggrandpa Israel was living in John & Sarah Cooper household. I would really appreciate if you have any time to make inquiries on my gggrandma Catherine to find out when she died and where she is buried. Also, if time permits to check on the other siblings of Francis/Frank their names were: Mary age 21, Thomas age 19, Sarah age 13. I have found some info on Sarah Mayberry who married a James Newton Moorehead in about 1861, he was from Romney and was a Doctor and served in the CSA and was killed in action at Chancellorsville. I would appreciate any help that you can provide. I know your time will be in a rush for your own research, just hoping you can squeeze a look at mine or keep me in mind while you do your searching, so if you run across the names you will recognize them. I appreciate any help. Bye, Frank Mayberry in Muskogee, Ok USPS Address: 318 North 'G' Street, Muskogee, Ok 74403 P.S. Simon D. Taylor is buried at the Brady Cemetery, in Cass County, Grand River Twp. Missouri several of his children are buried with him. His wife Sarah Myers is buried there also, a lady that was living with them, her name was either Pollard, Pawling, or Poland I forget which is the correct spelling. You will probably know. She, is possibly related to my Mayberry's through the Pennybackers and De Havens of Pa. I believe I saw the name Pawling in the De Haven line. Good luck and let me know about your trip. Where are you living at now? Bye, Frank phil cartmille wrote: > I am planning to visit Hampshire County and surrounding area later this > summer. Your best bet would probably be the county library a short distance down Main St. (west) from the Courthouse. I understand they have very good reference materials and that the staff there is very helpful. Don't even consider the local "historical society." I have heard that it is more a social club than anything and unresponsive to historical queries. Go to http://www.wvweb.com/www/potomac_highlands/hampshire.html and go down near bottom and click on "Hampshire Co. History." phil cartmille wrote: > I would appreciate any helpful hints that any of you may have about where I > might find local historic reference material in Hampshire.
