    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] The Wives of Darius Whitlock

    3. Divorced, beheaded, died, div -- no, that was Henry VIII, sorry. :( Anyway, for obscure reasons I spent the day trying to track Darius Whitlock in the census. It was a little sad. Darius (M) Whitlock, 4, appears on the 1850 census, apparently the son of Minor and Catherine. He's in the household again in 1860. By 1870, he's married to Lucy E, and they have a daughter Emma. Come 1880, and they've added Albert O L, Laurence J, and Margaret to the family. Skip to 1900, and his wife is Florence, and the previously mentioned 4 children are no where to be seen. Instead, Florence and Darius have Russell B, Bessie, and Walter W. 1910, Dare's wife is Priscilla J, and the household contains Russell B, Bessie L, Walter W, Harry E, Ernie E, Fred, and Priscilla's two sons from her previous marriage. I still can't find them in 1920, but in 1930, I find Darius, wife Sallie J, and there are no children in the household -- nor do I see any other Whitlock in Hampshire County. So, I went hunting for the missing sons (obviously, they're easier to track!) and didn't find any of them in the census index at HeritageQuest. Then I pulled up the cemetery pages -- and down at Capon Chapel, are entries for Darius, Lucy, Florence, Albert W, Emma W, Gertie W, and Walter W. Over on Timber Ridge, there's Ina (Whitlock) Anderson, Alva C, and Cletus and a few others born after 1915. And up at Loom, a whole list of people whose initials don't match anything else I've got. But all the kids *still* aren't accounted for, so I pulled out the new Frederick co cemetery book -- no Whitlocks. Turned to Kerns' Back Creek book, and there are only 4 in there, none of them instantly identifiable as belonging to Darius. Nothing in Historical Records, same author. I'll cruise the county marriage and death records tomorrow at the library, and then later I'll probably go pick up the obituary for him, just to see if any of those 10 kids survived him. I sure hope so. I'd feel a tad better if someone could assure me that I've misread Priscilla as Sallie, too. I mean, FOUR wives?!? BTW -- if anyone knows the maiden names of Lucy, Florence, and Sallie, I'd appreciate a note? Priscilla was a Nicewarner. Cheryl (who *cautions* future readers to NOT-contact her about the Whitlocks, because she has no real interest in or connection to the family. I did this trying to unravel a completely different family.) *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* Cheryl Singhal (Singhals@erols.com) http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cpafug/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvhampsh/ http://bottonycross.purpleflowers.net (Bottony Cross DAR) http://www.rootsweb.com/~cresap/ http://members.fortunecity.com/csinghal1/ (Joanna Waddill UDC)
