I'm passing along a response that R. Wayne McGahuey sent today to a subscriber of this List, who confronted him privately via his new email address. I have permission to give this report. Wayne stated that he had unsubscribed from the List, and is no longer involved with the cemetery project. He left Hampshire County without giving notice, including the organizations who were funding him (GPS and indexing). Indeed, Wayne is living in Florida, which confirms his statement to me in August that he had purchased property there. He now states that the reason for moving is that his "wife's health took a turn for the unexpected and we had to move to warmer climates, we have moved to Gulf Breeze, Florida." Backing up a bit, here is an email dated April 3, 2003 to the Hampshire ListServe: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "Greetings one and all, (April 3, 2003) Many thanks to all the people that helped donate money for the purchase of the Global Positional Sensor (GPS). Today I got the word, that of the Hampshire County Historical Society was funding the rest of the money to me for the purchase the GPS. Tomorrow, at noon, I will be leaving West Virginia for my trip to New Orleans. Once in New Orleans Linda and I will start our honeymoon with a 7 day Caribbean cruise on Carnival Cruise Lines. We will drive down tomorrow (Friday) and sail on Sunday. After spending 7 days and 6 nights on the water, we arrive back the following Sunday and will spend the night in New Orleans before driving back to WV on Monday sometime. Sorry, to make a long story short, when I get back, I will go to Best Buy in the Washington DC area and buy the GPS and start the recording of the exact location of each cemetery. I'm in the process of producing a Topographical 64 page booklet of Hampshire County. I will place each cemetery in the book with it's GPS location. Wayne of Capon Bridge April 3, 2003 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Back to the email today, Wayne said that the files on his website will be deleted within three months and that he has no plans for further use. Although I cannot speak for others without consultation, I am almost certain that an organization in Hampshire County will see this project to completion, either the Hampshire County Historical Society, the 250th Anniversary Committee or whatever. If all else fails, there is a backup of several individuals of professional stature who have offered to volunteer. I feel more confident than ever, that the project will be completed, although some slippage has occurred. I will make an announcement to the List when this has been determined. The reason that I've been a hound dog or devil's advocate on this project from the beginning is that I sensed something remiss, and no amount of debate or challenging on this forum nor in private was enough to point it in the right direction. I am thankful that the data are not being published in the present state as found on the website. I have trekked the Hampshire County cemeteries for more than three decades as a researcher, local columnist, and author whose family roots in Hampshire County extend back to the 1700s. I am not able to assume the the role of project director for the cemetery book (due to another major project that is due in July 2004) but I will be available to contribute information, and perform a consultative role as needed. Wayne concluded by saying, "I had a wonderful time doing the work and research. I hope I can find a worthwhile project here in Florida." I wonder if that will be another cemetery project? Wilmer L. So...Did Wayne give the GPS to the Hampshire Co. Historical Society for someone else to use? "Wilmer L. Kerns" <wkerns4@comcast.net> wrote:I'm passing along a response that R. During the Depression, my great grandfather Millard Pownall lost his job with the railroad and he and his wife Edna Haines Pownall closed up their house on Rosemary Lane and resided and worked at the "Romney Hotel," He was a desk clerk, and she cooked and cleaned. Does anyone on this list know anything about this hotel--such as who owned it, where it was located and what is standing on that lot now? Nancy
Nancy, I don't know about the hotel but we are probably cousins. Nancy, As far as I know, the only hotel operating in Romney in the 1920-30's was the New Century Hotel. It was torn down in the late 1950's as I recall. It was located at the corner of Main Street (Rt. 50) and Grafton St. The Bank of Romney community room and parking lot stand on this lot now. Ann Hill's laundry mat on Grafton St. occupies one of the old outbuildings from the hotel. The New Century was a very grand old hotel. The accommodations and restaurant attracted people from far and wide. Eleanor Roosevelt was known to go out of her way to stop there. Hope this helps, Jane At 11:13 PM 10-01-04, you wrote: >During the Depression, my great grandfather Millard Pownall lost his job >with the railroad and he and his wife Edna Haines Pownall closed up their >house on Rosemary Lane and resided and worked at the "Romney Hotel," He was >a desk clerk, and she cooked and cleaned.
