New info on my McCullough family has just come to me. John McCullough was born in Belfast, Ireland Oct. 7, 1803 John McCullough married Mary Mahoney 1834 or 1835 in Hampshire Co. Questions: 1. Are there immigrations records in Hampshire Co.? 2. Are marriage records available in Hampshire Co. for 1834/5 or elsewhere? 3. John McCullough worked on the B & O Railroad. So are there any employment records? 4. John McCullough lived on the Potomac River & his first son, Edward, was born in Hampshire Co. The census record for 1850 is in District 24. Does this pinpoint where they lived? Any guidance would be appreciated. Elizabeth, great granddaughter of Edward McCullough
I think District 24 encompassed all of Hampshire Co. in 1850. Living on the river only narrows it down a bit, since branches and tributaries of the Potomac run through much of the county, but particularly near the WV/MD border. You should probably get a good, detailed map of the area. In 1860, a (younger) 26-yr old John McCullough, brakesman for the RR, was living with the Robert Butler family in Piedmont, Hampshire Co., VA. The Butlers ran a boarding house. --- Elizabeth Whitten <ewhitten2@comcast.net> wrote: > > Questions: > 4. Hi, Thank you for the census info. I'm guessing that the House family may be connected to Deborah in some way just as the Shanholtzers and Pattersons. Another connection between my Amos and the Amos born in 1820, both were carpenters. Thanks again for your help, Chuck --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Hi Jackie, Maybe this website has some clues although your Hanna is not mentioned per se, another Hanna of a younger generation (Adam Starnes daughter) is: http://www.trellis.net/steel/sta/index.htm It's possible that she was a daughter of Frederick, Sr. and Mary Starnes although no documentation exists to prove the connection. Hi, Do you have any details on the 5 year old Jeremiah Poland living with the House family in the 1860 Hardy County, WV census and the Poland household near him? I suspect that he could be my Jeremiah Poland who is in the 1860 Hampshire, WV Census with the Shanholtzers and Pattersons. Amos Poland born 1819-1820 is probably related to my Amos born about 1805 in some way. Hanna S. Poland in 1860 living with John Hannas is Jeremiah's sister. Amos Poland died sometime between 1855 and 1859, and Deborah Poland married John Hannas. With him, she had two more children: Solomon "Soll" Hannas and Lear Hannas. Thanks, Chuck --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Find out what made the Top Yahoo! Searches of 2003
Hiram Pickering, my great-great-great grandfather, was born in Virginia about 1803 (1850 census). He was named the groom in a marriage bond posted in March 1828 and naming as the bride Sophia Ann Posey. His eldest child was born about 1832 (1850 census). A blacksmith, he sold his business property but retained its use - probably what we would do today by borrowing against it - in 1836 (real estate records at Romney). In 1840 (census), he heads a household that includes a son of the right age to be my great-great grandfather, Joseph F. Pickering. Hiram repeated the sell-but-retain business maneuver in 1848 (real estate records at Romney). In 1850 (census), he heads a household at Slanesville that includes Joseph, then 9, six other children and a wife named Sophia rather than Sarah. He has been a convict (census), and this Sophia appears to have been born Sophia Peer (1872 death record of their son, Timothy). In 1856, Hiram sells his business again (real estate records at Romney) but this time may have done so as we mean the term today; I have no further record of him. In 1860 (census), his estranged/widowed wife Sophia and their children are living in Paw Paw. Since some of those children may have stayed on or left descendants in Hampshire County, I will close Hiram's paragraph by listing their names: Mary E., John, William OR James(known to have been in Ohio by 1870), Ann Rebecca, Timothy, Sarah C. and Margaret E. Joseph was born about 1841 (1850 and 1860 censuses). In 1860, he was a 19-year-old blacksmith (census). Family lore UNconfirmed by any direct records says he moved to Missouri just before the Civil War; by 1869, he was in Ohio (marriage license) - where he married a native of Hampshire-neighboring Hardy County. His 1913 obituary says the move to Ohio came just after the Lincoln assassination, but some evidence contradicts this. His son, my great grandfather John Franklin "Frank" Pickering, never lived in Hampshire County but used to go there to hunt in the Cacapin Mountains with an uncle or cousin or friend. While I have no proof that Hiram was born in Hampshire County, there are (scanty) records of one earlier Pickering there - whom I therefore suspect may be Hiram's father. Benjamin Pickering appeared in the censuses of 1810, 1820 and 1830, and he also witnessed a will that was written in the county in 1824. Thanks so much. We did have the bit about 1920 but not the 1900. His first wife was Susan Lloyd. His second wife was Martha Alice Smith whom he married in 1908 For some reason we can not find any info on Hiram's parents who are supposed to be Peter & Elizabeth Ridings. There was a marriage of a Peter and Elizabeth Dayton in 1840 Hardy/Gant county but after 1850 Elizabeth is on the census without Peter although children appear to be born with out a listing of a male head of household. Nothing on your Amos, b 1805... Jeremiah appears in the 1860 (age 5) and 1870 (age 15) censuses in Hampshire Co. in a large household of Pattersons (James, etc.)and Shanholtzers (Joanne, etc.) and a few other surnames. (Possible relatives?) It would appear that his parents might be deceased - no sign of your Amos, if 1805 birth year is fairly accurate. There were Amos Polands in WV though, notably one b about 1818-19, in Hardy Co. in 1860, living near a 5-yr old Jeremiah who was living with a House family. Confusing, hmm? The census was taken in Aug in Hampshire Co. and in Jul in Hardy Co., so it's even possible these boys are the same Jeremiah. I have seen that happen before! Hannah S. Poland, 15, was in the home of John Hanna (or Hannas?) in 1860, in Romney. --- chuck owens <cancertech7@yahoo.com> wrote: > > I'm looking for any info on Amos Poland born > about 1805 in the > Hampshire, VA area. Hi Genie, Thanks for the info, but I have all of that. Some of it is even WRONG!! Asher's wife WAS Sarah Blankenship. However, she was not the d/o Daniel Blankenship. (The quotes from the DAR Patriot Index were from one of Asher's g-granddaughters in the early 1900s when she joined the DAR. The lineage has since been updated in 1976 when my mother & I joined the DAR. The service info is correct, but not the parents for Sarah Blankenship Crockett). She was the d/o Peter Blankenship, Jr & his wife Jemimah Perdue. My Blankenships and Crocketts intermarried all the way down the line. We've also never found any information that would indicate that Asher's middle name was Anthony. Someone found the name 'James Anthony Crockett' and has decided that he was our Asher and merged the lines. My mother & I talked to a cousin years ago in the early '70s when we were still looking for our connection to Asher. Truman Crockett was the g-grandson of Asher and he could remember his grandfather -Andrew Johnson Crockett - who was Asher's youngest son. Truman was the one who told us that Andrew's father was James Crockett. When we mentioned that we kept finding the name of 'ASHER' Crockett Truman got all excited and said YES that's his name "JAMES ASHER CROCKETT"!!!!!!! This one lists an Asher Crockett as alias James > Anderson Crockett. Doubt if he is the same one > as above. YES this is my gggg-grandfather James Asher Crockett who took the name of James Anderson when he re-enlisted the 2nd time to get away from his cruel master. This is kind of ironic because the website for the 'BATTLE OF COWPENS' where Asher participated in the battle now thinks he's a "minority". Thanks for looking. Hello, I'm looking for any info on Amos Poland born about 1805 in the Hampshire, VA area. I'm guessing that he may have been the nephew of the Amos Poland who married a Comfort Hopkins based on his name. He married a Deborah (maiden name unknown) b. about 1825. He had at least two children: Hannah S. b. abt 1845 and Jeremiah b. Oct. 1855. I'm especially interested in the names of his parents and his wife's maiden name.
