This is a great asset for just about everyone, I'd think! (Nice to be able to use the "search" function, too, which of course you can't on the paper copy---eyeball movement is not nearly as quick....) We're lucky to have you, thanks! Cheryl - your work is absolutely terrific and very much appreciated. I had not read the Maxwell & Swisher book for a number of years, and find these "biographical sketches" extremely interesting. While I realize they tend to be pretty 'glossy' - it does give more personal background than history textbooks. As I live 35 miles from the nearest large reference library, and 45 miles from a FHL, being able to access this information online is "better than sliced cake!" Thank You Very Much... Clara in NE
Lori, Much of Wayne's work is now online at the website below: http://www.historichampshire.org/cems/cems-ind.htm More cemeteries are in the process of being uploaded. I have a feeling that the project is on hold until the 250th celebration is finished (end of 2004). There is still much work to do, finding more cemeteries and verifying and editing what information we have. This is still a major project. Wilmer L. Hampshire and Frederick County Friends, I am looking to correspond and obtain additional information on the SHANHOLTZER and SNYDER (German) lines of my Mother-in-Law, Mary Ellen Snyder-Long (Born 1941) of Fort Ashby, WV (Mineral County). Many of them are buried in Levels Cemetery, Levels, WV. Specifically, I would like to know who her 2nd GGM, Elizabeth Shanholtzer's (1832-1913) (m. John R. Durst) parents, grandparents etc. are. Also, who her 2GGF, Frederick Snyder's (1828-1908) parents, grandparents are....see below. Thank you in advance for any assistance provided As a side note, my father, William H. Park, has purchased Dr. Wilmer Kerns' book, "Shanholtzer History and Allied Families Roots in Hampshire County, W.VA and Frederick County, VA", which includes eleven generations of desc. of Johannes Schoenholtzer, the German immigrant who settled in Chester Co., Pa, in 1727 and 223 pictures, most of which represent the earlier generations of people born 1792-1900. I have not received it yet in the mail, but hoping that some of those ancestors below are included in the book. Apparently you were not a member of this List when the announcement was made about a new book title "Hampshire County, West Virginia, 1754-2004." I am posting this again for the sake of anyone who may be new to the List. For those of you who have an interest in Hampshire County (originally a part of Old Frederick County, VA until 1754), a book is being published to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the County. It will be ready for delivery in March (or April). The title is "Hampshire County, West Virginia, 1754-2004." Unlike most books in this class, it has a complete name index and a general index. The publication may be described as "friendly to genealogists," although it is not a genealogical work per se. It will be bound in hardcover, 8 1/2" x 11". There are 94 chapters (2-4 pages each) plus numerous pages of "box topics," photographs and maps. Approximately 75 "authors" or writers participated in the project, many of whom are well-known for their areas of expertise. The editors were Roberta Munske and Wilmer L. Kerns. The book presents a cross-section of people and events over a 250-year period. New information and insights are presented rather than reiterating what others have said in publications of the past. The book contains excellent insight and discussions of Colonial history, which has been neglected in Hampshire County. Among other topics, here is a brief list of subjects: early settlement, Native Americans, a writeup on each of the counties that were formed from Hampshire; early settlement, history of transportation (roads, railroads, etc.), agriculture and industry, medicine and doctors, school history, profiles of elected officials, the court system and jail, and physical science (geology, ecology, plants and animals, etc.) a brief description or history of the major communities, African American history, the fine arts and artisians, and much more. Also there are chapter or "box" biographies of selected residents of the past (e. g., Col Elias Poston--genealogy chapter), Capt. William Foreman, Richard Williams, Jack Schaffenaker, Maud Pugh, Grace Kelso Garner, Warren E. Duliere, Joseph Edwards, James Caudy, Job Pearsall, Isaac Millar, Lt. John Blue, John William Wolford, John Jeremiah Jacob, John Jacob Cornwall, Herman Guy Kump, William Ansel Jr., as well as George Washington. Special attention was given to the various wars and their impact upon Hampshire County residents. The landscape of genealogy is undergoing some major changes. During decades of the past, genealogical research was little more than a collection of names and dates and relationships. Today, there is an emphasis on understanding the historical context. We believe that anyone with family roots in Hampshire County will find this to be a helpful companion. This book could easily retail for $45.00. A special pre-publication price was considered, but a decision was made to set a reduced price for everyone at $29.95 + $4.00 shipping. West Virginia residents should add 6% sales tax. You may order now; make check payable to HCCVB and mail to: Roberta Munske/Hampshire 250 Book HC 64, Box 39 Yellow Spring, WV 26865 Disclosure: the book is published under the auspices of the Hampshire County 250th Anniversary Committee. For Jeremiah Smith grave: Take US Route 50 west out of Winchester toward Gore and WV line. About 12 miles from Winchester, VA you will see on the right an historic highway marker for Willow Shade, the home of Willa Cather. Just past this sign- maybe 1/8 mile, you will cross Back Creek via bridge, and just beyond the bridge, take first dirt road on the right and stay on it until you arrive at the cemetery. Hampshire/Frederick County Friends, My father and I will be returning to Frederick County, VA and Hampshire/Hardy Counties, WV in early April and we need help with detailed directions to the burial place of Capt Jeremiah Smith (1711-1787) and other early settlers (100 or more graves there, most unmarked). According to Dr. Kerns, in his book "Frederick County, Virginia: Settlement and Some First Families of Back Creek Valley, 1730-1830--this site is "just north of U.S. Route 50 on the west side of Back Creek near Gore, VA", but I don't know exactly where or how to get there. Also, in Hardy County, I am looking for anyone with information on the homestead (including exact location) of Enoch Park (1794-1859) m. Margaret Ruckman. I have heard that it is still standing. Enoch is buried near Kirby, WV. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
