    3. Cheryl, The 19 Sept 1895 marriage of Darius Minor Whitlock to Florence C. Barrett is listed in V. B. Horton's "Hampshire Co. Marriages of the 1800's." None of his other marriages are listed. There are marriages listed for other Whitlock's: Edward, Elizabeth, Lottie, Lydia, Margaret, Mary, Risus, and William. Do you want any of these? Four marriages! Good grief! He was worse than one of my paternal gg-grandfathers in Va. who had 3. It seemed that soon after one died, she was replaced with a younger model. Needless to say, he had several children. Elaine

    3. Divorced, beheaded, died, div -- no, that was Henry VIII, sorry. :( Anyway, for obscure reasons I spent the day trying to track Darius Whitlock in the census. It was a little sad. Darius (M) Whitlock, 4, appears on the 1850 census, apparently the son of Minor and Catherine. He's in the household again in 1860. By 1870, he's married to Lucy E, and they have a daughter Emma. Come 1880, and they've added Albert O L, Laurence J, and Margaret to the family. Skip to 1900, and his wife is Florence, and the previously mentioned 4 children are no where to be seen. Instead, Florence and Darius have Russell B, Bessie, and Walter W. 1910, Dare's wife is Priscilla J, and the household contains Russell B, Bessie L, Walter W, Harry E, Ernie E, Fred, and Priscilla's two sons from her previous marriage. I still can't find them in 1920, but in 1930, I find Darius, wife Sallie J, and there are no children in the household -- nor do I see any other Whitlock in Hampshire County. So, I went hunting for the missing sons (obviously, they're easier to track!) and didn't find any of them in the census index at HeritageQuest. Then I pulled up the cemetery pages -- and down at Capon Chapel, are entries for Darius, Lucy, Florence, Albert W, Emma W, Gertie W, and Walter W. Over on Timber Ridge, there's Ina (Whitlock) Anderson, Alva C, and Cletus and a few others born after 1915. And up at Loom, a whole list of people whose initials don't match anything else I've got. But all the kids *still* aren't accounted for, so I pulled out the new Frederick co cemetery book -- no Whitlocks. Turned to Kerns' Back Creek book, and there are only 4 in there, none of them instantly identifiable as belonging to Darius. Nothing in Historical Records, same author. I'll cruise the county marriage and death records tomorrow at the library, and then later I'll probably go pick up the obituary for him, just to see if any of those 10 kids survived him. I sure hope so. I'd feel a tad better if someone could assure me that I've misread Priscilla as Sallie, too. I mean, FOUR wives?!? BTW -- if anyone knows the maiden names of Lucy, Florence, and Sallie, I'd appreciate a note? Priscilla was a Nicewarner. Cheryl (who *cautions* future readers to NOT-contact her about the Whitlocks, because she has no real interest in or connection to the family. I did this trying to unravel a completely different family.) *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* Cheryl Singhal (Singhals@erols.com) http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cpafug/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvhampsh/ http://bottonycross.purpleflowers.net (Bottony Cross DAR) http://www.rootsweb.com/~cresap/ http://members.fortunecity.com/csinghal1/ (Joanna Waddill UDC)

J B Heare was my great-great grandfather and I descend from his son, Lorenzo H or better known as LH Heare, to son Ray and Mildred Good Heare to my father, Fred and Shirley Garland Heare. James Brown Heare was one of at least four children of Mathew Heare (son of Adam and Margaret Tood Heare) and wife, Mary Ann Powelson Heare (daughter of Charles and Anne Alexander Powelson). Mary Ann died around 1840-41 and Mathew remarried 1842 to Martha Ruckman (daughter of Joseph B and Grace Cramer Ruckman). In September 1870, Mathew moved his family to St. Clair County, MO, but the family of James Brown remained in Hampshire County. Ten children were born from this union, one died as infant. Unfortunately no pictures or inventory. Does an inventory exist anywhere? I believe that my GGgrandfather, J.H. Clem is buried here, as he is listed in the "11th Virginia Cavalry" book by Richard Armstrong as "Buried Park Cemetery, Hampshire County, WVA" If anyone has ever been to this cemetery or has knowledge about it or any possible inventory, I would appreciate your help. 3. Hi Genie, Thank you for the Book References! I see your aware of John Dietz Perry. Do you connect to this family in any way? I've got 3 cesus' on John Dietz Perry: 1870 & in 1880 there were 2 enumerations. Here's some notes on Michael Perry: NOTES: 1. All the books, biographoes and encyclopedias on John Dietz Perry seem to have copied each other and state that Michael Perry, "was a native of Pennsylvania, but removed to Hampshire county, Virginia (now West Virginia) about the year 1805, and owned and operated a flour mill on the South branch of the Potomac river. While his brother, John, bought a home further south and established himself in South Carolina." 2. Michael's son John Dietz Perry's 1880 census states that his father was born in VA. and mother in MD. 3. On a 2nd census in 1880 John Dietz Perry states that his mother was born in VA. (Hmmm?) 4. Michael's wife Rachael Bartholow died 9 days after the birth of her second child Thomas Washington Perry. The children John Dietz Perry and Thomas Washington Perry were left in the care of their maternal grand parents Thomas Bartholow Jr. and Ann (Nelson) Bartholow. It was thought that Michael died whithin a year of Rachael's death about 1817 or 1818. But, just a few pages away from finding Rachael's marriage license in Allegany CO., MD., I found a 2nd marriage license to Elizabeth Jones in 1818 also in Allegany CO., MD. and Michael is in the census of 1820 in Hampshire Co. (W)VA his name is spelled "Perrey". I also found Michael Perry on the 1830 census in Hampshire Co., VA. But using Ancestry .com the transcriber placed his name in the search engine as "Berry" even though his name is in the middle of the "P's'; because the P & e are close togeather. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? 3. Encyclopedia of the History of St. Louis : a compendium of history and biography for ready reference. New York: Southern History Co., Haldeman, Conard & Co., proprietors, 1899, 3001 pgs This book, admittedly a secondary source, contains a short bio of John D. Perry, son of Michael and Rachael (Bartholow) Perry. It says John was born on the south branch of the Potomac in Hampshire Co. VA on May 15, 1815. His father was from PA, moved to VA about 1805, operated a flour mill on the Potomac, etc. Perrys were of Scotch-Irish stock. The mother was dau of Thomas and Ann (Nelson) Bartholow, a VA family that immigrated from Alsace-Lorraine to America about 1700. Mother died when John was about 18 mos. old and he and brother Thomas W. were left in care of maternal grandmother. Two yrs later, the grandfather Bartholow moved to sparsely settled western VA and the boy's father Michael died shortly afterward. (The rest is about the son John D. and his career, move to MO, etc.) __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Search - Find what youre looking for faster http://search.yahoo.com

    3. Cartmell's book, listed below, has a whole chapter on mills, including some of the early ones. Of course, there were probably countless early mills that are undocumented.
