    3. Mike, I can't help you with Kuykendall Mill Run, but Piney Mountain, according to my Delorme Atlas software, is located NW of Kirby close to, if not within, the Nathaniel Mountain Wildlife Management Area. It is on the eastern side of the Nathaniel Mtn Wildlife Management Area. The nearest numbered County Rd. is CR 10/3 which runs SW off of CR 10. Piney Mtn. is almost exactly west of that road intersection, slightly to the south. There is another unnumbered/unnamed road to the west of Piney Mtn. Elaine

    3. My indirect ancestor was given this grant, have a copy of it, opens with: William Claypole Deed 1755 The Right Honorable Thomas Lord Faifax Baron of Cameron in the part of Great Britain called Scotland Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia to all to whom this present writing shall come sends greeting; Know Ye that for good Causes for and in consideration of the Composition to me paid and for the annual Rent hereafter reserved I have given granted and confirmed and by these presents for me my Heirs and Assigns do give grant and confirm unto William Claypole of Frederick County a certain Tract of waste and ungranted Land in the said county on the Lost River of Cacapchon and bounded as by a Survey thereof made by Mr. George Washington. I turned up this The earliest Lord Fairfax grant located dates about 1747, around 1742 he set up a land office for issuing grants. Thus some of the earliest entries- 1744-late 1760's for Frederick might be for lands today found in other counties. In searching the index from which these names were drawn, I was unable to read any of the orginal documents even thjough some were accessible on-line. The copy was too small to read.

    3. I wrote Sharon H. Link, Clerk Hampshire Co. Commission P.O. Box 806 Romney, W.VA 26757 I asked her if the index of the old records could be checked for the Umstott name and sent her ten dollars. She wrote back and said there were 4 Umstott names and they would be $5 each. After I sent that, she wrote back and gave me the total amount that would be needed for copying. I sent it to her in November. I have talked to her several times on the phone and found her pleasant and efficient. Evidently, these records are very hard for her to access and it took quite awhile for her to get the copies made but they were good clean copies and she did an excellent job. There has been a lot of talk on this site about the prices charged but I know of no county that doesn't charge for copy and postage as they should. 3. I did a search for South Branch Manor on the google.com search engine, and came up with the following: West Virginia State Archives Manuscript Collections Ms79-198 South Branch Valley Collection http://www.wvculture.org/history/ms79-198.html The manuscript collection has LOTS of personal notes and letters from the late 1700's through the mid-1800's, many original deeds, receipts, affidavits, depositions, papers from court cases, real estate disputes, etcetera. I don't know how to accessthese records short of driving to Charleston, but locating the records is certainly a start. The reason that I got South Branch Valley Collection with a search for South Branch Manor is that an 1801 Rental Roll for South Branch Manor is in the collection. If they have any earlier rental rolls, they're not in this particular collection. Brian Brian D. Core P.O. 1. [WVHAMPSH-L] South Germany was de-populated
    2. HERMON B FAGLEY
    3. Too often, we trace out ancestors back to a locality in Europe, and quit, without learning the history there. Perhaps you trace back to the Scotch-Irish,of ne Ireland, and don't hunt a generation earlier in sw Scotland. There were battles where the Highland Scots opposed the Scotch-Irish. Lumping Scotch, and Scotch-Irish is a mistake. And ne Ireland had many Anglio-Irish. You trace an ancester back to New Netherlands, and say 'Dutch" ,while there were many Flemish, and Walloon's,and French there. New SWEDEN had many FINN'S. The southern part of what, today,is called Germany, had many "countries". And the 30 Years War, and the Plague, had depopulated it. I read of one Prince who had only 3,of 200 ,able-bodied men left. I've read of many fields growing up in grubs, because there were no men left to farm them. So,men were recruited from Switzerland, and Austria, and ?? to repopulate it. And these people migrated after a generation,or less. I've asked the Germania,Va researchers, without being a smart aleck, "Were the Germania people Swiss?" because my reading of Swiss history has turned up names ,like those at Germania. . I think of SWISS neighborhoods in the mountian valleys.of the S BRANCH. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Cemetery Bill in WV Legislature
    2. Dear friends of WV genealogy and local history. This note is a bit political; but, I hope you will understand when you see how it affects what we as genealogists do. Two years ago I had a call from a man in Webster County asking me how he could get permission to visit his wife's grave. She was buried in a family cemetery on land that had formerly belonged to the family. Now the land was sold and the landowners were denying him access to the cemetery. I had to tell him that there was no law permitting him access, that the landowner was within his rights in denying access. Last year a family here in Lewis County ran afoul of the landowner when they tried to bury their mother in what was once a church cemetery. The land around the cemetery had been sold, the new property owner had built a new house across the access road and would not permit the hearse to carry the mother to her final resting place. The case did go to court, a ruling was made for the establishment of a new road (which has not yet been done), and the landowner claims that he doesn't have to permit the family access to visit their mother's grave. Recently, a son of the family, after giving the property owner two weeks notice, was met by a man with a gun when he tried to visit his mother's grave. I know of other similar cases as these scattered around the state. Last year a bill was introduced in the WV Senate that would have addressed these problems. The House did not pass the bill. A couple of weeks ago, the WV Senate passed SB 90 which, if adopted by the House or if combined with a bill from the House would be a step forward in permitting access to family or private cemeteries by cemetery plot owners, heirs of deceased persons, family members of deceased persons and persons interested in engaging in genealogy research for the purposes of visitation of the grave sites, maintenance of the grave site or cemetery or research. It would also create a cause of action for injunctive relief if a person is not permitted access to the cemetery, requires visitors to conduct themselves in a responsible manner and limits the use of motor vehicles when accessing the cemetery. Now the House has HB 4370 in committee. If it does not get out of committee and if it is not acted upon in the next couple of weeks, the bill will die and there will be no relief. You can read HB4370 in its entirety at: http://129.71.161.247/scripts/as_web.exe?hbills2000+D+7832961 You can read the committee version of SB 90 (the one that passed) at: http://129.71.161.247/scripts/as_web.exe?sbills2000+D+9151603 The genealogical and historical communities in West Virginia began acting in concert four years ago when we established History Day at the Legislature. Now is the time for us to get our act even more together and contact our delegates about the importance of this bill!!! The property rights activists are sending negative comments to the sponsors of this bill and others. Let us, West Virginia's genealogists, family researchers and historians, work together to preserve an important part of our history and gain access to our sacred grounds. If you live in West Virginia, please contact your delegate about this bill and getting it out of committee. Some of the people who can help us get this out of committee and hopefully get it approved are Delegates Rick Staten, Bob Ashley, Oscar Hines and the delegates who introduced the bill: Facemyer, Faircloth, L. White, Amores. If you live out of state and want to offer your comments, you can send them snail mail to any of the persons named in last paragraph. Address it to them at the WV House of Delegates, Capitol Building, Charleston, WV 25305 - or send to me via e-mail and I will print them out and take them with me to Charleston next Wednesday evening (for History Day on Thursday). For further information about the legislature you can visit http://www.LEGIS.state.wv.us Some friends and I are sending this to all the county-L lists here in WV. Please feel free to pass it on to others you know who are interested in West Virginia's cemeteries. Thanks for listening (er, reading), folks. Many county genealogical and historical societies will have displays and attempt to inform our legislators about our needs in these areas. In addition, the state will be honoring History Heroes, individuals for most counties who have done work for history and genealogy at the grassroots level. Hope to see you there. 3. Let me apologize for having this on three lists. I have narrowed my James White's death between January 1850 and March 22, 1850. Were deaths recorded in 1850? Is there a death book? I would appreciate any help I can get and am willing to pay to get a record of this death. Thelma

    3. <<Which ship and voyage was it? Eda>> Michael Neff and Michael Kohr both arrived in Philadelphia aboard the James Goodwill on 11 September 1728. The ship sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, which was a common point of departure for Germans. Rotterdam is located near the mouth of the Rhine River; Germans used the river to travel from the interior regions to the coast. The ship's passenger list was published in Strassburger & Hinke's Pennsylvania German Pioneers, vol. 1. It can also be found in the PA Archives 2nd Series vol. 17, p. 15. Brian Brian D. Core P.O.
