Did I miss something about a book being found on the county? I'd be interested in anything on the Radcliffs. Except for the taxpayers list which I have. I promise not to get my hopes up. Gary Radcliffe glradciffe@aol.com
I think you can purchase the book directly from Dr. Wilmer Kerns. He reads this list and may answer. I will cc him this message. It was the book that got me interested in genealogy. There is no better written book, a very good index makes it a good reference book. Many of our ancestors that settled in Hampshire County came from Chester Co, PA or NJ. You will find most of the Savilles, Wilsons, Allens, Piles, Daniels, Ruckmans, Friends to name a few came in on the Delaware River, settled in Chester County or NJ, than came south to Maryland and on to Hampshire County before going west. Dr. Kerns book on Old Frederick County names many of those families with birthplaces, siblings or other relatives in those areas. Thanks Bill, I hope I can still get the book. I downloaded your file and am going to take a look in a little bit. I will let you know if I find a connection to all of them. I am sure I will. Queet
According to the Shanholtzer History and Allied Families by Dr. Wilmer Kerns Mary Shanholtzer, daughter or Peter Shanholtzer, Sr. was born 1782 and died about 1854. Married Oliver saville, son of Joseph and Lydia (Pultz) Saville. Most Savilles in Hampshire Co. descend from them. Peter's father was John Schoenholtzer, II, born March 11, 1748 in Chester County, PA, and died Jan 22, 1824in Vincent Township, Chester Co. A farmer, member of German Reformed Church. Served inRevolutionary War as a soldier in Capt. Barber's Company of Second Battalion of Chester Co. Militia. He did not apply for a pension. He marred Christina, maiden name unknown. The Shanholtzer History has some good material on your ancestors and is well written. Yes, Hampshire Co. was in Virginia, as was all of West Virginia until 1862/1863? The Civil War and all..... Gary Radcliffe
You will find the Hampshire Co. censuses and/or indexes from I believe 1810 up to 1870 (images for 1860 and 1870) at the Mineral Co. Rootsweb page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvminera/mineral.htm Mineral Co. was formed from Hampshire Co., and that page has a couple of dynamite coordinators! You will find a lot of useful info on both Hampshire and Mineral Counties there. You might also like to post some specific names and dates--I have some Hampshire Co. Saville connections myself, through my Fouty forebears. Hermon, Thanks for the information. Are you stating that your lines names began with the Saville variations and it was not their last name? If so, explain to me the connection. This is a new area to me - I realize that overseas they did thier naming differently than we did. Queet
Bill, Any idea where I can purchase a copy of that book? The Shanholtzers are my line. Queet
