    3. Thelma - I'm checking into Robinsons (my wife's family). Her line begins (as far back as we know) with Roger (1750-1795) and Rebecca (1745-1829) Robinson, who may have come here from somewhere in England. Line continues through Lot O. Robinson (1778-1852), Richard Robinson (1805-1885), Levi Robinson (1841-1897) and James Homer Robinson (1881-1955). Are these yours? 3. Fort McIntosh was built at Beaver Falls,Pa on the Ohio near the Pa-Ohio line by Militia and regulars. They then proceeded west, into Ohio, and built FORT Lorenz sp? at Bolivar,Oh,and left Capt jOHN Gibson and company there for the 1777-78 winter. They were the 1st 2 of a proposed string of supply forts stretching towards the British at Detroit. Fort Lorenz, and the idea, were abandoned by the next fall because of hostile Indians. 3. A roadside marker on US 220 north of the Hampshire - Hardy boundary line states according to "W. Va. Historic and Scenic Highway Markers" published in 1937 by the State Road Commission of W. Va. the following: "This peak on Hampshire-Hardy line rises a thousand feet above the surrounding hills to a height of more than half a mile. From it can be seen points in three counties. It overlooks "The Trough," famed for its history and scenery." Also the Delorme WV Atlas page 39 gives its location and elevation as 2620 ft. I believe it is one of the geographical features that was called out when the boundary between Hampshire and Hardy Co was specified in the 1780's.

    1. Re: [WVHAMPSH-L] Hanging Rock
    2. I just always assumed that everyone had been talking about Hanging Rock on Rt. 50 in eastern Hampshire Co. (especially Lonny when she said she had been there and gone up to the place where the Rebels waited to ambush the Union troops); it is the only Hanging Rock, W.Va., on my Delorme Street Atlas software and the only Hanging Rock on the official Hampshire Co. map distributed by the Hampshire Co. CoC.. I have many ancestors from that general area, and one gg-grandfather had a farm in the Hanging Rock area. He and his family left the county and relocated in Allegany Co. in the early years of the Civil War, with his 3 adult sons serving the Union--one of them died in Andersonville, one was killed at Hanging Rock near his old family home, and one survived the war. Hanging Rock is about two-tenths mile east of the southern-bound intersection of State Rt. 29 on North River Mountain, and as you say, about half-way between Augusta and Capon Bridge. Question: Does anyone know where the bodies of the "Yankees" killed at Hanging Rock would have been buried, assuming that they were buried and not just left laying for wildlife to dispose of (not to mention of the potential spread of disease, etc.)? Would it have been right there? Elaine Bill Pyles wrote: > Many of us have thought for years that Hanging Rock was just off Route 28 > between Romney and Springfield. 3. This is my brick wall! I'm trying to find a connection for my Bernard Watkins (1810-1882) with a Watkins line in Loudoun or Hampshire Co but just don't know which Watkins it was. Facts I have from various Loudoun and Hampshire Co. records: -Bernard's parents were WILLIAM and ANN WATKINS ( m. ca 1805). I have no maiden name for Ann. -William died (ca 1820); Aan (sic) Watkins appears in 1820 Loudoun census. -Ann remarried DANIEL BROWN in 1825 (Loudoun Co) -1829 Loudoun Co lawsuit (Watkins vs. ALEXANDER HENDERSON) and earlier Hampshire Co land records show land in Hampshire Co purchased by brothers THOMAS (Thomas Bates Watkins?) and WILLIAM WATKINS and possibly another brother JAMES WATKINS. The lawsuit settlement named William's heirs as the same children of Ann Watkins Brown above. The "friend" of the minor children in the lawsuit was BERNARD TAYLOR, a Loudoun Co resident. -William Watkins in census records for both Hampshire and Loudoun counties so I'm not sure where this family was living before William's death. I've even wondered if Thos., James, and William Watkins were related to the Watkins ferry family (located in today's Berkeley Co. ) -Bernard Watkins and his sisters all married Loundoun Co residents in late 1820s-mid1830s: John Gant, George Neptune, John Adams, Charlotte Littleton. I just haven't figured out a connection between Hampshire Co and Loudoun Co. If anyone can help me figure the out, I'd sure be a happy camper!
