Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hampshire?read=1208 Surname: Dawson ------------------------- We know our family was in Hampshire County (or what was to be Hampshire County) in the 1850s and 1860s. One important relative for us to track down is Cephus Dawson, in the area from at least the 1820s to the 1850s. There is a missing link between this Cephus Dawson, and another, older Cephus/Cephas Dawson who received a land grant from Lord Baltimore for a chunk of western Maryland in the early to mid 1700s, who is the originator of our Dawson branch in the colonies. Does anyone have any hints?

Herman Husbands ,Quaker, and Swede,Isaac Cox,were schoolmates in Cecil Co,Md abt [?] 1730's. Husbands went to Baltimore Co,and on to w NC, where he was a leader in the anti-government tax Regulator movement. When the Regulators were defeated by pro-government militia at Alamance ,NC in 1771, Herman Husbands,Quaker, was sentanced to death, and fled north to Isaac Cox's beaver trapping cabin near Somerset-town,Pa. The other defeated Regulators were forced to givein 1771,an oath to King George III-an oath many honored in 1776. Few places had the bitter brother-vs brother Whig vs Loyalist warfare as the Regulator area. In part, the Boone-Bryan settlement on NC's Yadkin River. 1776-1779, when defeated Loyalists were foced into Whig militia,or maimed. Anyway,Herman Husbands kept a diary that survivied til the 1876 era county histories were written. And there quoted. Husbands said ,writing from to be Col Isaac Cox's beaver trapping cabin near Somerset,Pa,in 1772, that Cox thought the new county of Bedford Co,Pa would bring more people, and ruining hunting and trapping,so,he moved west to the Ohio River. My colony,ex Westminster,Md folks, followed from Stoystown,Pa in 1773. Herman Husbands was counted in the 1772 tax list of Brother's Valley,Bedford Co,Pa by the alias of Toescape Death ! ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! We believe he was born in Ireland or Scotland (conflicting responses). Thanks so much!

Dear Subscribers to the Hampshire County, West Virginia Mailing List, I would love to learn more about Robert DOUGLAS, who was born in Scotland about 1774, and lived and died at Hanging Rock, Hampshire County, [West] Virginia. Robert DOUGLAS's wife was Elizabeth WOOD, who was also a native of Scotland. They had seven children: Sarah ["Sallie",] Nancy, Mary ["Polly"], Rebecca, Thomas, Stephen and William. William DOUGLAS was born 29 Feb 1808 at Hanging Rock. This family migrated to Greenbriar County, [West] Virignia, and then to Greenup County, Kentucky. If you have information or suggestions regarding this DOUGLAS research, let's work on it together. This Robert DOUGLAS may have been my fifth-great grandfather, if certain items match. Thank you very much, and I look forward to meeting other researchers via the List! Randal "Randy" W. Cooper Lorain, Ohio
Barbara, I am not researching this family, but since you mentioned that not much is available other than the tax record info, have you checked out the 1850 Census for Hampshire Co. on the Mineral Co. web page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvminera/census.html? There are Brelsford's and Brellsford's listed. When you go to the site, click on the 1850 Census and be patient; it is a very big site and takes a minute or two to download the index completely. Beneath the page number section is an alphabetical index.

Hi Amanda, Census records show a Mulledy family in Romney in the early 1800s. They were one of the few Catholic families in Hampshire Co. Two of their sons became Jesuit priests. One of them, Rev. Thomas Mulledy, S.J., was president of Georgetown University (then Georgetown College) for many years and his diary and papers are in the library there, entries such as:"Dec 16 1836, Set out for Romney; Dec 23, Mass for Father and family; Apr. 22 1849, Set out for Romney (from Phila.); Apr. 23, arr. Balto. 4am left 725, arr Romney 10pm; Apr. 29, Mass for Mother and sister Anne. Diary closes in 1850 but lots of other material. I have more info if you are interested. Who is Elizabeth Elswick, Spinster? She was arrested in Montgomery Co., Va., for assaulting Polly Dobbins in 1823, and for stealing from James Howerton and Anderson Dobbins in 1826, and from Abner Dobbins in 1836. I have transcribed, with the help of Maureen Copley, the following court records from these arrests, which are pasted below. Elizabeth may be the dau. of Jonathan Elswick, b. 1747, s/o John Elswick II and Lydia Unknown Elswick Lorton, m. Millie Unknown Finch; however, she is not named in Jonathan's 1826 will. Jonathan is a brother of my gggg-grandmother, Mary Elswick who m. Archibald Thompson. A cousin thinks Elizabeth may have been a weaver. Surnames of parties in these suits show up in early Virginia records of several counties, and in some WV and KY areas. These include Anderson, Bishop, Cecil, Charlton, Crandal, Compton, Covey, Cox, Currin, Dobbins, Dobyn, Elswick, Gardner, Goodson, Godbey, Hall , Hayes, Howerton, Hughes, Jones, Kent, Lester, Lewis, Lorton, Pepper, Rupe, Smith, Taylor, Thomas, Wade. NOTE: Hand-written entries on forms are typed in capitals. Documents are dated 1823, 1824, 1825, 1826 and 1836, and are numbered 1-15. Hi Shirley, I am also researching the Kimberly line in Maryland. I'm looking for Priscilla Kimberly that was married to David Paxton. Her parents were Catherine (Conn) Kimberly and Jacob Kimberly. If any of those names are familiar to you, I would really appreciate any informtion you have. Ruth, I have corresponded with Karel White about my "King" Van of VA- as opposed to Maryland Van!! The name Van was used and used and now haunts us! For a while I thought the guy I was after was :Maryland" VAN but 'twas not to be!! I attended St James School in 1948-9 and had fun exploring the very old area - includes several civil war skirmishes! Many thanks for your data tho - it helps a lot! Hi Shirley, I am researching the PARKER family. My paternal grandmother was a PARKER. I am looking into the several Parkers of Hampshire Co. to see if I can connect them with my Parkers of Allegany Co. MD. They lived so close to Allegany Co. I have found many Hampshire/WV names on Marriage List here in Cumberland courthouse. Back in 1700' and early 1800's they just seemed to hop the MD--VA/WV line. I am trying to find proof that my Maryland "Parker" family is extension of the the WV Parker family. Think there was a JOHN PARKER who married HANNAH PETERS, they had son and grandson named ROBERT---same as my gggg-grandfather who had land here in MD. I did find 3 Land Deeds of WV Parkers having land here in Allegany Co. MD. We were Washington Co. MD until 1789, when Allegany Co. was formed from Washington Co. I know there were Swearingens and Cresaps here in Allegany Co. They had land in what is now called Cresaptown---but back in 1700's was called Upper Oldtown. And Oldtown, MD was once called "Skipton" My Robert Parker grandson was named GEORGE BYARD PARKER. (Could have been Byrd/Bird, but mispelled over the years.) Will just keep digging----hoping for that one hint that some WV Parkers spilled over into Western MD. Thanks for answering, and Good luck with your search Pat Hook ---------- > From: s2ee@juno.com > To: WVHAMPSH-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [WVHAMPSH-L] Swearingen and Cresap (Claypool/Bird) > Date: Wednesday, May 24, 2000 12:43 AM > > Pat, > I know so little about my Kimberly line.. shame..but I did find a couple > marriages which fit in ..maybe sisters of Elizabeth. > > >From Washington Co Marriages (Ohio) > Maria Kimberly m.
