    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] JOHN ELSWICK - JOSEPH HOWE >VA 1700S
    2. Jemima Gee Morse
    3. Doug Thompson wrote June 25, 2000 In Reply to: JOSEPH W. HOWE IN JOHN ELSWICK 1756 WILL by Jemima Gee Morse of 1828 "Joseph Howe was a neighbor to John Elswick and is mentioned on several records as early as 1749 in what is today Hardy co. WV. A good history of this relationship is published in "Listen to the Mockingbird" by Daniel Dunbar Howe. Joseph Howe moved to Pulaski co. VA in 1769 and is buried there. The book is available through library loan in several places." Doug, Thanks! I did an archive search of WVHARDY and VAPULASKI, found nothing; however, I did find the Mary Anne Murphy Stone <zadock3@mediaone.net> post at WorldConnect <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GE T&db=zadock&id=I2135> and she has an extensive annotated history of Joseph Howe. I also learned from Sharon Barzhoff that George Washington's papers are now on line at the Library of Congress site <http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gwhtml/gwhome.html> George Washington surveyed the John Elswick land in Hampshire Co., VA, in 1748, evidently as an apprentice to the Lord Fairfax surveyors. I have the copy of his Elswick survey and Joseph How (Howe)'s name is on it. Thanks, Jemima Gee Morse

    2. I'm sorry, Joyce, but that was a Paul Frazier page and now I find another unreachable Paul Frazier page that cannot be displayed. One of Paul's cousins wrote another of his URLs and it was not reachable. I hope he's alright. Regarding Edward Radcliff, he definitely went to Illinois with the Baptists. His brothers were all Methodist Episcopal and were living in Bourbon County, KY at the time on land grants for service in the Rev'y War. They only stayed in KY for a short time with the exception of Richard who d. in Garrard Co., KY in 1814. The Iowa Baptists you mentioned may have just moved for other reasons, lack of good land, etc. Thanks for the input. Gary Radcliffe glradcliffe@aol.com

    3. Hi, Carol! I have a distant cuz who lives in Parkersburg, Va., her name is Sherry Archer, her email address was sherry7477@hotmail.com. however; the last time I tried to contact her, the email came back undelivered. So, she may have dropped off line for awhile. Her mailing address is: 708 Lakeview, Parkersburg, WV 26104. She is a descendant of the Neels, Neale of that area. Maybe, you could contact her by sending a post card. That is what I am going to do today. Just to check her out to see what is happening. She, may be just changing iSP's, or may have computer problems. If she, writes I will tell her about you . So, I'll keep your email for awhile. 3. Gary, Not sure if this will help you or not but somewhere I read that a wagon train left Hardy Co in late 1790's with many families bound for Keokuk County, Iowa. This is across the Mississippi River (I think) from Illinois. There is a history book written about Keokuk and Hardy County settlers were said to be industrious, hard working, etc. I'm sorry this is so vague. BTW, I could not get into the web site. I got to Edward Radcliff but couldn't find the link to the colony. Do you have any more specifics? Gary, Lydia Unknown 1721-1798 (per Archibald Thompson Diary) was twenty years of age when my 5th g-grandmother, Mary Elswick was born in 1741. It's unlikely she had been married earlier. She had four children under eight years of age when John Elswick II died abt. 1748-1749. She re-married Jacob Lorton and had two children: Israel, b. Mar 1749, and Rebekah, June 1754. Do you have proof that Lydia was a Radcliff? We've found nothing to document her maiden name. Have you seen this Ratliff file? http://www.netlizard.com/matt2/ratliff.html Thanks, Jemima > > Gary Radcliffe > glradcliffe@aol.com > > ______________________________

These are [?] the 1st Baptists on the s Branch,Potomac, [?] by 1782 The Badgley Surname Message Board Message #35 Thursday, April 27, 2000 Subject:Reverend David BADGLEY Posted by:Nora Tocus Message:Reverend David BADGLEY was a Baptist minister who brought a colony of 154 people from Hardy CO VA (now WVA) to New Design/Kaskaskia IL in 1797. By some reports he was recruited by the American Baptist Mission Board to establish a Protestant church at Kaskaskia because young American soldiers, since the Revolution, were marrying French girls and entering the Catholic church at Kaskaskia, and the Baptist Mission Board wished to avoid this. In 1796 Badgley made an exploratory trip on horseback with several men and determined to bring a group of congregants, neighbors, and family members to settle in Illinois. They left Hardy CO in the spring of 1797 and arrived at Kaskaskia on July 4, 1797. This was a summer of torrential rains and flooding; much of the land was under water and as the group first took boats on the Ohio River to Massac then traveled overland through southern Illinois, the trip turned into a disaster. They then arrived at their destination to encounter an epidemic of "pestilential fever" which ki lled half of their party. Reverend Badgley survived to establish the first Protestant church in the Western Territories. Some of his party settled in Illinois while others returned to the East or to some point along the way back, believing (with some justification) that Illinois was a very dangerous place. Regarding a previous posting, I have not heard of the Badgley party stopping in KY but would be interested to hear details and documentation. Please contact direct Nora PS Much material is available on the history of BADGLEY in America---goes back to the arrival of Anthony Badgley in NY 1688. She was born in 1900 and married the Reverend Victor Carl Decker. She had 9 children, Leona (Herk), Eloise, Vernon, Donald (Jack)Loretta, Grace, Howard, Victor Jr.(Dickie)(my father) & Lelia. They owned a home on Rt. 46 between Keyser and Fort Ashby. I'm not sure if this address is Mineral county or Hampshire county. My grandparents moved around a bit because he was a minister. But it was mainly in W.Va. At the time of her death in 1969, they lived at the house on RT 46. I am looking for any information on her family. I was told that her parents names were James and May or Mae (Simpson) Anderson and I do know that she had at least one brother, Charles? called Bud Anderson who lived only a few houses from them on Rt. 46. If you know anything about this family, please feel free to email me at sassyklerk@aol.com. >

He lists his birthplace & residence at the time of enlistment as Hampshire Co, VA. What happened to this man following the Revolutionary War? Who were his parents? His son John NEAL & John's spouse Ann ODELL were early settlers of Nicholas Co, WV but that county's history book says that John NEAL's father, Revolutionary Soldier Jerry Neal never came to that county.
