    3. I located a LILLER graveyard in Mineral Co WV on 9 Jul 00. The graveyard is fenced and the location is about 600yds NNE of the intersection of Rt 50 and Knobley Rd (sometimes called Headsville Rd). The GPS location is 39deg21.10minN and 78deg59.06minW, elevation 1117ft. It is located on the Alfred E. HARRIS farm. I did grave stone readings and rubbings to get the following information. Would someone working the Mineral Co WV pages ensure these get posted. Grave Stone Markings, top to bottom ___________________________________________ Chris E. 1. Re: [WVHAMPSH-L] STEINBECK family circa 1815-
    2. HI Karen, you bet I've been researching the STEINBECKS in and around Baltimore,Md and VA(W) for over 40 years! I have hit a brick wall with Frederick Stinebeck (on census) Steinbeck and wife Sarah (Sally) Eckert .. Have much on Frederick's & Sarah's family line. I've several documents on Anna Dorothea and believe that JOhn C may be a brother or father of my Frederick... Frederick had a brother DAniel who lived in Baltimore but moved to Cape Girardeau, MO. They were in the fur business..lived on FAyette street (I'm doing this from memory right now)... There was a JOhn G. (George?) who died in Baltimore and my ggg grandpa Frederick d in Romney in 1823. How do you connect..Anxious to hear back. Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hampshire?read=1273 Surname: Anderson ------------------------- The list of soldiers from Hampshire County does not include Thomas Anderson a soldier from the beginning who became a Captain of Virginia Millitia and was at Yorktown with his company of sappers when Cornwallis surrendered. Thomas was also in the colonial wars ie with Lord Dunsmore at Chillicothe and Braddocks defeat at Fort Dusquene with his father William. I wonder how this all got lost as William's history used to be in the library in Keyser in 1965. Thomas' son James also entered the army as a yound teenager during the last three months of the Revolution.

    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Wolford in late 1700s
    2. Hi, New to List.... I have an ancestor, John Wolford b 1754, that stated in his Revolutionary War pension that he was born in Montgomery County, PA. In 1754, that was still part of Philadelphia County...so he must have gotten word somehow the new county was formed. He served in the NJ militia then moved to Hampshire County, West Virginia. He married Elizabeth Woolever. In the early 1800s, he moved to Randolph County His children are: Jacob, Jemima, Abraham, John, Anna and Martin. His father's name may have been spelled Wolford or Wohlford or Wohlfarth or any other of the German variations. I suspect it was his parents that emigrated from Germany, but I can't find proof. Just not a lot of early information due to requirements back then and also the destruction of records. I have a lot about his later life and his children is anyone is interested in sharing. Regards, Diane

    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] RE: [WVMINERA] Fwd: Vicki Horton Address
    2. Holt, Mark A. (MHOLT)
    3. I sent the original email request. I saw the Jacksonville, NC address on the Mineral County website. I'm interested in obtaining some books directly from Vicki... which I assume are out of print. Perhaps the NC address isn't actually her residence, but the address of some third party that handles the book requests. A quick look at www.switchboard.com <http://www.switchboard.com> reveals the following: Horton, Jack Green Spring, WV 26722 (304)492-5994 Horton, Vicki Green Spring, WV 26722 (304)492-5994 However, it's possible that she's recently moved to NC, and the switchboard address is an old listing. I hope that someone out there can clear this up. 2. Sara, I am sure we all know that George Washington had no heirs by Martha, but before he was very old, he apparently did spend much time in the Orange/Old Frederick County, VA area "surveying et al". My Loftons had his crew do their land surveying in Old Frederick Co. in the 1740s for ex. as did many others in that era! Perhaps, just perhaps, if DNA were sampled of old families in the Panhandle and Shen. Valley we might find some FitzWashingtons or FitzCoberns even today! Perhaps one in our midst should even write a novel based on this notion of a possible inheritance with considerable historical significance!! (move aside Jefferson!) Dick Matteson College Park MD

It does not have any "suggestive" reports of how they spent their lonely nights, but it shows Washington as a real human being and not some demigod void of any human charcateristics. 3. John, John Varvel was a surety, along with Michael Harness for Matthias Yoakum as administrator to Francis Yoakum's estate in 1751 (Frederick Co Will Bk.) I'm guessing this is same guy: Jno Vanville (Chalkley transcription) May21 1760 mentioned Daniel Richardson's estate settlement, and Jonathon Warwell mentioned in 1749 James Coburn estate. James CoburnCockburn was one of the earliest actual on the ground settlers in SBV. He first lived near Old Fields but when VanMeters came to take up their grant, he moved onto the Petersburg area where he established a mill at mouth of Mill Creek. He appears in Augusta Co records in 1747 and died by April 1749 when his estate was ordered to be appraised. Son, Jonathon. I recall but don't have at fingertips, a pretty hilarious account of the George Washington's survey party staying with the Coburn's because of a "buxom lass". Oh, men! :-) Wm Miller in records by 1744 on Col. James Woods Fee Bk for Frederick Co (taxes) and Genn surveys 433 A - #4 on Wappacomo or Great SBP for him by 1749. 1752- he has 380 A on R. Cacapehon, adj Edward Hogan. John Dunbarr conveys to Wm Miller, farmer of Frederick Co. on Lost River (Chalkley3:306); 1747 court case: John Preston vs. Wm Miller; 1749 court case Wm Hughes vs. Wm Miller; Wm Miller also on Roanoke/New River 1750; 1752-gone to Carolina; 1754 a Wm Miller is decd, son David Miller. Would guess these are not all the same guy and probably not a complete list of all records citing him. Isaac Johnson/Johnston shows up in Augusta Co records15 March 1758 mentioned in estate of Christian Tosher. Vance surveyed 400A for him on Patterson Crk adj. Theodorus Davis. 1766: Isaac Johnson brother in law to Isaac Robinson; Isaac Johnson ready to move to Carolina (Chalkley 1:342) ; Land left to Isaac's heir, John and wife Sophia Darling in 1768.
