    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Leases-Ft Ashby Cemetery
    2. In answer to the 7/17question posted to Mineral County by olivermarie@mindspring.com (marie robey): My husband and I went to the Fort Ashby Cemetery in Hampshire County, West Virginia in July 1999 looking for Lease burials. We wrote down all the Leases we could find. They are: Norah Lee, daughter of A.J. & P.C. Lease died May 29, 1906 age 24 years, 4 mos, 22 days (in front of the above was Anna Lease - no other information) To the right of the "tall section" was: Lease, Gertrude S. 1891-1949 * and Lease, Adam M. 1880-1957 * They were next to: Lease, Arthur L. 1917-1984 and Lease, Dorotha M. 1920-1962 and Lease, Baby 4-3-1948 Baby daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C.D. Lease 1960 (note: this baby was near the foot of * above) Lease, George W. 1911-1974 and Lease, Myrtle I. 1915-1997 Somewhere behind the "middle section" was: Lease "Our Darling" 1963 Rebecca S., Daughter of Arthur & Sandra Lease Front of tall hill: Father: Lease, Charles J. 1906-19__ Mother: Lease, Ruth E. 1916-1972 To the left of them was: Hazel T. Lease Steigerwald 1903-1949 That's all the Lease burials we could find. I stopped in a near-by drug store, and the lady there told me the caretaker's name and suggested that I might call him, which I did. I can't remember the group he belongs to, like perhaps the Masons (they took over the care of the cemetery in the 1950's, I believe). He said there were no written records of who was buried there, and when they took over the care of the cemetery, it was in very bad shape. So basically, what you see on the tombstones is all the information there is (unless, of course someone has recorded information on their relatives privately through the years, or if someone has researched and documented Lease death records for Hampshire County). However, there must be quite a few Leases buried in unmarked graves because there is a book by Hazel Elisabeth Thornton on the Leise/Lease families and many of them were "buried in Fort Ashby Cemetery". Hazel has a web site that you can access at Familytreemaker.com -Kathy Lease Piechocki@aol.com

    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Crabtree/Darkey/Twigg/Carder
    2. Dear Listers: I am reposting my lines to both Allegany and Hampshire Co., WV lists. I haven't been here in a while but I have come across some new information. Upon my return from WV this past weekend, I had a chance to visit two long, lost family members. My cousin Becci and my Aunt Mary Slider. I found out a little more stuff from both of these fine young ladies. In the Oldtown Cemetery in Allegany Co., MD, there are buried Carders. I know that George Carder, son of Abbott Carder, came to Allegany Co ca. 1820s. Becci explained to me that Springfield (?) is about 15 minutes from this graveyard and it seems like a logical choice for someone coming to Allegany Co about that time. So, I am now beginning to wonder if these Carders aren't related somehow to George Carder and Maria Hansborough. I will be looking into get death certificates for them to see if I can connect them somehow. I didn't get them all [for lack of film] but hope to soon. I will not be going to MSA until July 29th [hopefully] to do look ups on these Carders buried in Oldtown Cemetery. So, I should know more soon. >From Aunt Mary, my suspicions have been confirmed. In the transcription that my friend and I have done [so far] on the Zion Greenmount Cemetery [Allegany Co., MD], I have found a Lina Robinson two rows behind where Channing [my great grandfather] is buried and she is indeed the sister of Channing Lee Jones. So, that would make Vance who I thought he was---Channings' wife, Margaret, sibling! So, now I have not only found Channing's sister, but Margaret's brother! Thank goodness. I have only been able to locate [now] three of Margaret's siblings and [I believe] most of Channings. However, I still have not search census records for Channing. But, I have also been told that the family came from PA! I am still unsure of what she said about his birth place but now I know I must move on to PA to find his ancestors. Also, Aunt Mary has given me some photos of Margaret, Channing, Carl [their oldest son] and a few others--Lina being one of them. She also gave me a photo of Harry Davis. He is the son of Nancy Robinson and William Davis, both of Hampshire Co., WV. Nancy is another of Margaret's siblings. But, I haven't been able to find anything on this line. There is no birth notation on Nancy in any of the birth books for Hampshire Co. that I could find. I also have not been able to find her in death records but I know from having this picture that they had to be somewhere and did have children. Can someone give me clues on what happens when someone has no birth record? What are the procedures when one must file a delayed birth record? Would that be found elsewhere? Maybe another book that I haven't looked into? Has anyone else had this problem, too? Aunt Mary does say that Twilly (?), another descendant of Nancy and William still lives in Hampshire Co., WV but I have no idea of where. So, there had to be more children than just Twilly and Harry. Guess I will have to look at census indexes again. Maybe I missed it in my mad rush in WV. Thanks for any input anyone can give me. Tina McKie Baltimore City, MD

    3. Hi Karen, From HISTORY OF HAMPSHIRE CO., page 274, ""It was not until after the constitution of 1830 was adopted that any superior court" (of chancery) was held in Hampshire Co." Up until that time the district courts were held in Winchester (Frederick Co.). I found chancery court records for 1809-1821 for Hampshire Co. at the Virginia State Library in Richmond as a part of Frederick Co. VA court records. LDS may have them on microfilm. 1. [WVHAMPSH-L] WARD - NIXON (POSSIBLY DIXON)
    2. Ruth Blankenbaker
    3. A few months ago I ran across a letter written in 1954 by Eva Lena (WARD) SWEARINGEN a great aunt of mine. In this letter she writes about her and her husband Ezra Swearingen's ancestors in Hampshire Co. I am particularly interested in the WARD family; however, I will quote a section in which she mentions several names in hopes that someone might see a connection and be able to help out with who the Mary WARD is that she mentions... I quote in part: Mr. Swearingen would help us out if he desired... But since his maternal Great-Grandmother was a WARD-- (I) Mary Ann Ward or Mary Jane - Married Thomas Nixon - among 10 or 11 children were (II) Richard Nixon married Mary Fogleman (II) Daughter married Hines (II) Jonah Nixon (she does not say who Jonah married) (III) (Jonah's) Daughter Rachel Ann married Wm Van Swearingen (IV) Ezra Herbert Swearingen Below this Eva Lena has drawn a line and then writes in two columns: 1st Column: I Ward Murdered (I) Mary Ann Ward Nixon - Brother and wife murdered.... (II) Jonah Nixon (III) Rachel Ann (IV) Ezra Swearingen married Rilla Green 1894 2nd Column: I Ward (I) Ward Brother of Mary and wife murdered (II) Thornton Able Ward born about 1815 married Elizabeth Ellen Crozier about 1847 (III) John Marshall Ward married Lydia Jane Fogleman (IV) John Harrison Ward ------- This John Harrison Ward is my grandfather, born in Cumberland Co, Illinois. This much I am certain of: In the WARD column for generations II, III, and IV, great aunt Lena is correct. What I do not know is the accuracy of her statements about the Nixon / Van Swearingen generations-- I have to take her at her word. My real question is this: Does anyone have ANY information about this Mary (WARD) NIXON, supposed sister of the WARD who was murdered? If so, does anyone know who this WARD might be? If you do, then you would be providing my family a missing ancestor we've looked for so long. I might also note here that I am uncertain as to whether this WARD family incident occurred while they were still in Hampshire Co (ca 1815) or that it happened after that when they'd migrated on to Ross Co, OH (ca 1820). Thanks and Regards, Ruth Blankenbaker rblanken@cec.state.in.us
