    1. Re: [WVHAMPSH-L] Bakers
    2. Thanks! I collect Bakers, in the feeble hope of eventually sorting them out. My Baker was Peregrine Baker (1779-1847), who lived in the Springfield, Hampshire Co., area and married Deborah Stockwell (1781-1847). They had these children (at a minimum): 1. Nancy Baker (1802-1850), m. (1830) Charles Wall of Bedford Co. (3 sons); and, second (1843) Jacob Grenzeback (2 children). 2. Lucy Baker, m (1827) William Short and moved to Adams Co., OH. after 1830. 2. Jesse Stockwell Baker (1817-1907), m (1841) Sarah Ann Baker, daughter of Thomas and Nancy (Glaze) Baker of Springfield. Were they related? 4 children. They, too, moved to Adams Co., OH, but much later (after 1850). I am eager to find out who Peregrine's parents were (and who Deborah Stockwell's were, too)--it looks like a lifelong project. 3. Thanks, Cheryl & Rosemary, for the location. If this were the closest one to Hampshire Co., then I'm sure that is where the boy in question was sent. Now, I'll have to find out if there are any records--I would guess the WV Dept of Corrections (or whatever they're called) would be the best place to inquire. Elaine

    2. There was a reform school in Pruntytown, Taylor Co., West Virginia during that time period. Don't know if it was the only one in the state or not. My great-great-Uncle & Aunt (William "Tyce" & Annie Newlon Wells) had a farm that bordered the reform school and he used to catch runaways. I believe he also got paid for each one he caught. He was also a Justice of the Peace. I don't know if there are any records available but could find out. Cheryl Jackson Malone

    3. In Vicki Horton's book Hampsire County Records there is the following entry from the Common Law Order Book #2. 27 May 1824 Cornelius Devore Senr and Michael Baker, Admr's of Richard Baker, deceased against Joseph Logston and Sally his wife, late Sally Baker. I ordered a copy of the actual record and it provided no additional details. How would I find out what this lawsuit was about and who won. Background: Richard Baker died ca 1819 in Londonderry Twp., Bedford Co., Pa. At the time of this death he owned land in Hampshire County. Michael Baker (Richard's brother) was a resident of Hampshire County and one of the Administrators of Richard's estate. Richard Baker's widow, Sally, married Joseph Logston and they later moved to Hampshire County. Since Richard Baker owned land in Hampshire County, would there be any probate records in Hampshire County? Any information or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joyce

Mary Combs, born about 1810, prob. in Hampshire County, married Gibson Ruckman, about 1830 in Hampshire County. They had six children living when she died about 1849. Gibson Ruckman appears in the 1850 Federal census, Hampshire Co., VA, pg. 150B. Anna Combs, age 64, appears in the household, with this family. She is possibly the widow of James Combs, and the mother-in-law of Gibson Ruckman. I will exchange documented information on these families.

    3. I don't know about Hampshire County, but there is a OXIER spelling here in Allegany County, Md., just across the Potomac River from GreenSpring, WV. In the Oldtown Methodist Cemetery there is a ALBERT B OXIER, 1890-1950, & wife, ADA D., 1897-1988. They were originally from Ridgeley,Mineral County, WV, & had a daughter named Chick(don't know real name) who married a LES DAWSON, who worked for the WESTERN MARYLAND RAILROAD, as a signal man, & they lived in the old Station house at Oldtown. I don't know if this info helps, but thought I'd pass it along, just in case. So, my question is does anyone know if it is possible that an estate wouldn't be sold till years later after someone dies. The reason I am asking is that Rev. Pugh's Diary listed Josiah as dying in 1755 and the estate sale records aren't dated until 1763. If someone can explain this I would really appreciate it. Both of the documents are estate inventories and they both listed a Bible.( anyone know of one that is still around?) Thanks.............Kathy

Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hampshire/1330 Surname: Baker, Stockwell, Wall, Grenzeback, Edwards, Foudy, Bonham ------------------------- A number of references to this Taggart family appear in "Hampshire Co. Minute Book Abstracts, Vol. I (1788-1802)," compiled by Vicki Horton (Clearfield Co., 1993). One especially pertinent one is this (p. 78) for 20 Feb. 1797: "Lucy Taggart is appointed guardian of John, Ann, Francis, Daniel and Jonathan Taggart orphans of Francis Taggart, dec'd...Page 327." And on p. 92 (16 April 1798): "Lucy Baker late Lucy Taggart and Edward Dyer who were administrators of Francis Taggart dec'd..Page 35." P. 117, 21 Oct. 1800: "Ordered that Patrick Baker and Lucy, his wife late Lucy Taggart...guardian of John Taggart be permitted to bind their said ward to Michael Cole who is to learn him the trade of a hatter. Page 220." A very useful book! I personally am interested in Bakers as I am still trying to find a family for Peregrine Baker of Hampshire Co. (1779-1847).
