    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Looking for Asher CROCKETT
    2. Lynda Davis-Logan
    3. Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hampshire/1348 Surname: CROCKETT, BLANKENSHIP ------------------------- We're looking for the parents of James 'Asher' Crockett. On his Revolutionary War pension application papers, Asher, says that he was born in 1760 in Hampshire Co., VA. He further states that he ran away from a cruel master when he was 16 and joined George Washington's troops in New Jersey. He mustered out at the age of 19 and returned to Hampshire Co. where his old master tried to reclaim him (as he was not yet 21). He then re-enlisted and used the name James Anderson to avoid detection. Does anyone recognize any of this information?? Asher did not get married until he was 40 years old. By that time he was in Montgomery Co., VA where he married Sarah Blankenship. They then moved on to the Kanawha/Cabell Co. area of VA/WV. Asher says that he was with George Rogers Clark in KY. I'm assuming that was between 1782 and 1800 sometime. Would love to find Asher's parents. Why was he bound out?? . . .to learn a trade, was he an orphan or was he a 'minority' as stated on the Battle of Cowpens website that is maintained by the National Park Service??? Any and all information will be appreciated and will gladly share what little we know about Asher.

    3. Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/WV/Hampshire/1347 Surname: Arnold, Davis ------------------------- In the 1850 Census for Hampshire County, Hardin Arnold (age 38, born in VA)was listed with his wife, Nancy (age 37) and two children, Rich W. and Mary E. In an 1898 obituary for Nancy, Hardin Arnold was described as a "well known engineer for the B & O ... who was killed by the cars in 1859 after having been married for 20 years." Of the four children, two survived her, RH (a son) and Mrs. Martha Davis of Oldtown, Maryland. These are my only two sources for information on Hardin Arnold. Is there a possibility that the sons' names both were Richard? and that Hardin was my Hardin's middle name? Please email me if you have any suggestions.

    1. Re: [WVHAMPSH-L] Baker
    2. Dear Sara, Excuse the slow response, I have just moved from Israel to Nebraska and am in the process of renovating a house--but can't give up genealogical dabbling. I am still trying to figure out which Bakers produced my g-g-g-grandfather, Peregrine Baker (1779-1847), who married a Deborah Stockwell and lived in the Springfield area of Hampshire Co. up to his death (going by censuses, tax lists, and estate inventory). I do not yet know who his parents or siblings were--he had at least three children, Nancy (1802-1850, my g-g-grandmother), Lucy (m. William Short in 1827), and Jesse Stockwell Baker (1817-1907), who married the daughter (Sarah) of Thomas and Nancy (Glaze) Baker of Springfield--I'm wondering if they were related (they were near neighbors). I'm afraid I don't know anything about Anthony Baker, but Charles Hill on the Allegany Co. list was researching Jacob and Jemima Baker of Hardy Co.--possibly related? Ross Johnston's WVA Estate Settlements lists a will for Anthony Baker Sr. of Hardy Co., 10-4-1816, Devisees wife Barbara, son Anthony, daughters Elizabeth Harness, Catherine See, and Barbara Frontwine; and other devisees (unnamed in the abstract). There is also an inventory listed for an Anthony Baker, 3-17-1835. Copies of these can be ordered from the WVA Archives, WV University library at Morgantown, or the DAR Library in Washington DC. Let me know if you find out anything interesting! 1. [WVHAMPSH-L] The Stephen McBrides of Hampshire/Frederick Co.
    2. Grant McBride
    3. I've noticed several people inquiring about the family of Stephen McBride and Hannah Smith and mentioning this Stephen as the son of James McBride and Sarah Edwards. I believe this to be incorrect. Below is some of what I've found: Stephen, son of James McBride and wife Sarah Edwards James shows in Hampshire tax lists from 1782 - 1797 with only 1 male of tithable age (himself). In 1798 it shows him and 1 son aged 16+, which would put Thomas or James Jr born 1782. In 1799 he still has 2 tithables (himself and 1 son). In 1800 it shows 3 above 16 (himself and 2 sons) putting 2nd son born 1784. This continues until 1804 when son James Jr shows up on the tax lists and James Sr now shows 2 tithables. In 1805 James Sr shows with 1 tithable and son Thomas is now on the tax list. James Sr, in 1806, again shows 2 tithables and 3 in 1807, what appear to be sons James Jr and Thomas, still show the list (Stephen and possibly 1 other son who died young?). In 1810 he shows with 2 tithables (himself and 1 son) until 1811 when its just him as son Stephen shows on the tax list, placing his birth as 1790 (which corresponds with 1850 census where he is listed as aged 60). This Stephen McBride married Ruth Thompson, dau. of John Thompson and Martha Beard c.1810 Stephen McBride and wife Hannah Smith Stephen b. 1759 doesn't appear on tax list for Hampshire Co, but does in Frederick Co. Also, in 1806 this family moves to Ohio. No Stephen shows in tax list for Hampshire until 1811. This Stephen appears most likely to belong to the McBrides in Frederick/Loudoun Co. areas. Also, will of Elizabeth McBride 7/11/1824 mentions brother Stephen and his daughter Rachel. Stephen McBride b.1759 as far as I know didn't have a daughter Rachel as one of his 13 children. Another item, in the will of James Sr 3/15/1818 he states that son Stephen is to have use of the farm while his wife (3rd one, Mary Ashbrook)lived. Stephen b.1759 had been in Ohio for some time at this point. >From 10/28/1807 - 8/19/1808; 2/7/1814 & 8/20/1814 Land was conveyed to James McBride from Thomas Ashbrook and other heirs and legal representatives of Levi Ashbrook. 458 acres on the N. River of the Cacapeon. On 6/14/1831 John Hiett Executor of James McBrides Estate deeded the above 458 acres to Stephen McBride, the son of James McBride. This has pretty much convinced me that Stephen m. Hannah Smith is not the son of this James McBride. Grant McBride

    3. Kathy, I came across a Will in PA. where the husband died in 1777. His Will was not settled until 1813. My suspicions were verified---it was because the spouse of the deceased survived him by approximately 36years. She had possession of the Estate until her death. Could this also be the case for your Josiah??? Good Luck Pat Hook

    3. Kathy, My best guess is that the difference in dates is due to the so-called French and Indian, or 7 Years War, which totally disrupted things in the South Branch Valley as well as various court entries. People just had other things on their mind--like survival! so not all things were entered in court records immediately. I've also seen numerous cases, even in good times, when estates were not settled until several years later. Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hampshire/1340 Surname: HARLESS, HURLESS, FURL ------------------------- We are researching the family of George and Mary (Furl) Hurless/Harless from Hampshire County, West Virginia. George was on the 1800 Tax List for property owners with one person over 21 and one horse. This tax list was was for the Lower District or southern half of the Hampshire County, West Virginia. I believe George and Mary (Furl) Hurless/Harless married about 1792-1794 in a settlement near the Potomoc River and by 1807 homesteaded in Harrison County, Ohio where George died in 1825. His will was probated in 1828 and a Samuel Hurless, probably a son, was the executor of this will mentioning only Mary. No children were mentioned in this will but from Harrison County, Ohio records have identified 6 or 7 Hurless family members that could be their children. Would appreciate anything on either the Hurless/Harless or the Furl families that might help identify the parentage of either George or Mary...
