Hi --- I missed the first of this discussion, but my Aunt married a DEFFINBAUGH & the family was here in Allegany County in the mid 1700's, first I believe being Peter , & the name was DEVINBAUGH at one time--depending on who could spell better. Most spelled names like they sounded. Just like my Kifer line started in Germany as KEIFFER, went to KEIFER on my 3rd Greatgrandfather's stone, to KIFER on my Greatgrandmother's stone, & stands so today, although some choose the KEIFER spelling. Response to Roland, Message #5, 03 Sep 00; Hampsh-D- #251: My research and that of others shows clearly that 1) Michael Ernst (whom you seem to refer to as Michael Harness) always had the Ernst surname while living on The Tulpehocken; and 2) that his wife Elisabetha, had the surname Dieffenbach, of which Deffenbaugh was a later clerical corruption by non-German clerks; and that the Tevebaugh surname did not devolve until at least 30 years after Elisabetha and Michael were married; and 3) that Jurie and Blandina Westfall didn't even have a daughter named Elizabeth, and the Elizabeth Westfall in the Abel Westfall family was not born until ten years after the time of Elisabetha's and Michael's marriage. Attention: Bad News for researchers of ancestors on the South Branch in the late 1740s: A letter, 31 Aug 2000, from the Archives Librarian at The Handley Regional Library in Winchester, Frederick Co., has this to say about that "census:" "I have been searching for this item since we established the archives in 1979." "I have never seen the document...." So, until it is found and certified that it actually existed, that newspaper clipping that quoted from the so-called "census" in the 1920s or 1930s will have to be relegated to your "Not Proved" file. I'm sure we all hope that some day it will be found and verified. John Tevebaugh

The Archives is on the yellow line. You will be catching the red line in Gaithersburg. You can transfer to the yellow at Metro Center. If you get lost, just ask someone to help. Most Washingtonians are pretty friendly and helpful to strangers to the city. Also, each metro station has an employee at a kiosk. They are helpful as well. -----Original Message----- From: Robert W. www.nara.gov is the website. Research hours on Friday are 9am? to 5pm. Enter thru the back of the National Archives, show your drivers license, and go to Room 400. Probably the most likely source you will use will be the census microfilm from 1790 to 1920. Do go prepared with an idea what years/locations you want to lookup. Elaine, Who was Kelly? What did he do? He's buried here the grave yard beside my property--you know , the big one. There isn't a David here, could he have been buried in another Kifer cemetery that we didn't go to? Remember where I told you I used to live-- that it was Kifer land? there is supposed to be another Cemetery there & Stumps used to live there too. Must have been David? There is a Mrs. George Stump & children buried in the Catholic Cemetery(the little one beside of the big one), that's all it says on her stone, no dates, no first name, & the children are on separate stones-- Infant, Susie & I think there were more , but the stones are gone. I remember when I was a kid seeing more stones there. Long winded tonight!!:) Becci Elaine D Tomkins wrote: > Becci, > > Kelly Stump was the son of my gg-aunt, Chloe (McCulley)Stump and David Stump. Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hampshire/1393 Surname: CREGER, CREAGER, KRIEGER, CRIGER, CREEGER ------------------------- I am researching the Creger/Creager surname. My search has taken me to Jacob Creger, Sr., who moved to Tuscarwas County, OH., in 1811. Some information I have recently found suggests he may have come from or through Hampshire County, WV, on his way to Ohio. Jacob Creger Sr. was born approximately 1763 (in "VA" according to 1820/1830 census records), and it is possible he was born in Hampshire County, as well as any of children: Peter, b. 1793; John, b. 1802); Henry, b. 1803; Jacob Jr., b. 1799, Catherine, Margaret, and Sarah. Jacob Sr.'s wife was named Sharlot/Charlotte. Jacob moved onto land in Ohio he bought from George Kail, who I have been told was born in the Capon Valley area of Hampshire County. It may be the two families knew each other in Hampshire County before moving on to Ohio. I can be contacted via the e-mail address indicated or at 4217 Starr St., Lincoln, NE 68503, or (402) 471-6882 (work days).
