    2. The French-Murphy, McLaughlin, and Arnold cemeteries are included in Vicki Horton's book "Springfield District Cemeteries"--they are all on "Route 1/1, Green Spring, WV." From the map she provides, they seem to be the ones you mean. The McLaughlin cemetery is described as containing "several unmarked stones" (nothing else); the French Murphy has stones for these names: French, Myers, Murphy, Howard, Rector, and Stump. The Arnold cemetery contains two Arnolds and three Hasses. Look-ups, anyone? There doesn't seem to be a Civil War cemetery in this book--be very interesting to find it! If you cemetery-strollers ever find a grave for Peregrine (1779-1847) or Deborah Baker (1781-1847)--please let me know! I'm way out here in Nebraska... 3. Good news. I found out where the FRENCH-MURPHY Cemetary is located. It is in the second loop upstream on South Branch River (MESSICK Farm -- off ARNOLD-STICKLEY Rd). I believe it is about 100-200 yards East from the MCLAUGHLIN Cemetary. I also located the ARNOLD Cemetary on the FRENCH's Neck (due south of FRENCH's Station (over the ridge). Some people that own a lot near the ARNOLD Cemetary said there is also a Civil War cemetary near the ARNOLD Cemetary. Got to do some walking this winter. I will check them out when the snow knocks the weeds down and the snakes are gone.

    3. Thanks. The grave stone was just beyond the Civil War graves. The Civil War graves are right at the entrance to the cemetary. CORE was only about 3-4 rows back. So, I presume it would be second half of 1800s???? If location has value. Also. An oops. Was the Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney not Fraser. 2. Ellen Belcher
    3. Charles Hays married Margaret Ingmire. I am not sure of her parentage but I am descended from Christianna Ingmire, born 1819 probably in Hampshire County, who undoubtedly was her cousin or niece. Christianna married Geo. Washington Thompson in Zanesville, OHio in 1838 (working from memory here on the dates.. at this late hour...the IGI list's the marriage) and her new husband was the son of Benjamin Thompson and Charlotte Tripolet Thompson of Loudoun Co., Virginia (later Clarke County). Apparently there was a large exodus from Loudoun to Coshocton Co., Ohio and the surrounding areas in the 1820-1830 era. Christianna and Washington Thompson migrated to Bartholomew Co., Indiana circa 1845 and settled there. If they were traveling together maybe you could check out that Indiana county for clues. The Loudoun County web site had posted an article about this large exodus and maybe it is still on the site. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gem Ramirez" <Gem_I_M@yahoo.com> To: <WVHAMPSH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 09, 2000 3:14 PM Subject: [WVHAMPSH-L] Charles Gore Hays > Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum > Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/WV/Hampshire/1402 > > Surname: Hays, Hayes > ------------------------- > > My Ancestor was Charles Gore Hays. 1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Civil War letters on-line, William Montgomery of Springfield
    2. Just came across something really nice that I wanted to share with anyone who hasn't seen it yet--there is a site about the 33rd VA Voluntary Infantry (Confederate), including Company A (Potomac Guards), which was composed mostly of men from Hampshire Co., in particular the Springfield area. One section has a number of original letters, diary extracts, etc., written by Civil War soldiers, and they are fascinating. Included there are several letters written by William Montgomery of Springfield (do you have these, Susan Tyson?), which mention a number of other Springfield residents--besides providing a interesting picture of the war in general. The originals are part of the WV Collection at WV University, Morgantown (you can see the catalog for this collection online at the WV U. site--lots of interesting stuff there), and in fact three days ago I had inquired about them (I'm interested in Springfield) while requesting a photocopy of something else, so this is real serendipity for me! Enough blather--the address for the letters is http://members.aol.com/Vir33rdreg/P57-198.html. The Company A site is http://members.aol.com/Vir33rdreg/P5-198.html. You can click your way to other interesting Civil War sites from there--I think I originally found this through the Civil War Home Page or something... Enjoy!
