    3. Mike, First of all, I think someone has played "fast & loose" with the "old basement records." The Hampshire Co. Library has a copy of each version of William Rice's [unfinished] index to the old basement records, the first typewritten version (also at the courthouse), and the published "book" version which should be called a booklet. They are not the same. I found some items listed in the later published version that included items that had started out upstairs and for some reason were transferred to the ones from the basement. I know this because the wills of Larkin Day Henderson and his son Thos. F. Henderson (my gg and g-grandfathers) had been listed in an index (or abstract) of wills in a book published in 1995 which I saw at the library. I also found them listed in Rice's published index. When I looked for them in July in those boxes up on the shelf in the courthouse where the wills are kept, they were not there, so I had to order them--to be ordered from the State Archives where the old records had been sent. Two days later when I visited my aunt in Cumberland, she had copies of those two wills, and has had them for years. So I would like to know why the "switcheroo," and I wonder how many other records received this treatment. Obviously they were upstairs with the others in 1995, and I would be willing to bet that if I had ordered them before Mr. Rice came into the picture, they would have been found with the others upstairs. I have since received copies of the two wills, but not of another item listed in his index which I ordered. Ann H., the old basement records are in the WV State Archives in Charleston in the process of restoration and microfilming. To get a copy of any of them, one must place an order with the Hampshire Co. Clerk of Court, who will in turn order it from the State Archives. They will send you a bill with the copies. You will be charged a search fee and a copy fee, all lumped into one amount, not itemized. I believe that someone on this list had purchased Mr. Rice's "book" and had offered to do lookup's. Perhaps if you requested a lookup here on the list, they could tell you if the will you are seeking is in that index. That would be especially useful since the only version of Rice's index I saw at the courthouse was the first typewritten one, which was different from the later published version. 3. Cheryl, Wilmer Kerns did a very thorough study of the Hiett family of Old Frederick Co., Va.. (published in "The West Va. Advocate," Dec 15, 1988) which was a great help to me on the really early Hiett's. You are missing a couple of important Hiett links. Our Hiett lineage goes thus: 1. John Hiett (England>Pa.) m. Mary Smith (3 known children) 2. John Hiett, Jr. (Pa.>Md.>Va.) m. (1) ? and (2) Margaret (16 children of record) 3. Evan Hiett m. Sarah Smith (daughter of Capt. Jeremiah Smith) (10 children of record) 4. Jonathan Hiett m. Hannah Harrison (8 children of record) and Jeremiah Hiett m. Lucinda Kidwell (15 children of record) Note that almost every child and grandchild of Evan & Sarah (Smith) Hiett had a Jeremiah, Sarah, and Evan in their family, so one has to be very careful when referring to a Hiett with any of these 3 names. There were a few John Hiett's scattered around as well. If you need anything more, contact me directly, off the list. 3. Hi everyone, Don't know if this is the same Hiett family, but maybe it will ring a bell with someone. Combination Atlas Map of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, pg. 48 Kingman Brothers, 1878 JOHN HIETT, Jackson Township WILLIAM HIETT, the father of the gentleman whose biography is herewith presented, was a native of the State of Virginia, and during his residence in that State married Miss MARY DANIEL, also a native Virginian. By this marriage they were the parents of eight children-ELLEN, SAMUEL, LETTIE, ELIZABETH, JOHN, ISABELLA, JAMES and MARY, of whom only three survive, viz., ISABELLA, MARY and JOHN. WILLIAM HIETT was a man of great energy and unconquerable perseverance. Reared to farm life, and inure to labor himself, he early taught his children the principles of economy and industry, as the only road to success in life. In 1806, he moved to the then new State of Ohio, and became identified with the early settlement of Adams County. Brown County was formed in later years, by incorporating portions of Adams and Clermont Counties, Mr. HIETT's farm being included in the district thus created. Thus he became interested in the development of both counties. In a heavily timbered region, remote from the influences of schools, refined society, and all that makes life pleasant, and surrounded by all the trials and hardships which characterize a frontier settlement, he passed the remainder of his life. For a period of eight ears he continued to reside in this locality, during which time he made many improvements, and reduced his forest farm to a state of comparative perfection, deriving therefrom a return sufficient for the support of his family. He was one who ever commanded respect, and when, in 1814, his active life closed in death, he was universally lamented throughout the community in which he resided. JOHN HIETT, the subject of this biographical sketch, was born in Adams County, Ohio, on the 26th day of October, 1808. Left fatherless before attaining to the age of 7 years, he has been compelled through life to rely in a great measure upon his own exertions. From the fact that his early life was passed amid the scenes of frontier life, his educational advantages were of a very limited nature. Such as he enjoyed, however, were eagerly improved by him, and although his school privileges were limited to three months each Winter, the instructions there received laid the foundation for a store of knowledge which has placed him above mediocrity. Out of school hours, his time was occupied on the home farm, and this pursuit became, in later years, his chosen avocation. In 1829, he gave his hand and heart in marriage to MISS ELIZABETH HAWK, a native of Brown County, Ohio. This union was blessed by four children; named respectively, WILLIAM, MARY, JAMES and PHILIP. On the 10th day of March, 1834, Death entered the household, and his devoted wife fell a victim to his irresistible power. In the following year, MR. HIETT removed to Tippecanoe County, Ind., and located in Jackson Township, where he has since continued to reside. In 1837, he was a second time united in marriage, choosing for his companion MISS SARAH A. ODELL, also a native of Brown County, Ohio, who came with her parents to Tippecanoe County in 1831. They were the parents of five children-JOHN WESLEY, FRANCIS MARION, SUSANNA, SAMUEL R. and NATHANIEL G. In March 1846, MR. HIETT was again robbed by death of the companionship of a faithful and loving wife. Two years later, he married his present companion, MISS MARY F. DAVISON. MISS DAVISON was also a native of Brown County, Ohio, but was reared in Montgomery County, Ind., having removed to that county with her parents when quite young. This union has been blessed by eight children, named respectively, GEORGE WEAVER, ALFRED C., EMERY R., GEORGE W., ISABELLA L., SARAH A., CHARLES G., and MARGARET D. Each of the children was provided with a thorough education, and all have turned their talents to good account. SAMUEL R. attended Asbury University, at Greencastle, Ind., graduating in 1867 with the degree of B.S.; SUSANNA graduated at Terre Haute Female College in 1857, with a degree of M. E. L.; FRANCIS M. graduated at Rush Medical College in 1861; EMORY R., graduated at Asbury University in 1877, with the degree of A. B.; SARAH A. is now a student in high standing at Purdue University. JAMES located in California when quite young, and there engaged in mining with fair success. He subsequently married and engaged in farming, remaining thus employed until the date of his decease. WILLIAM removed to McLean County, Ill., where he engaged in farming; PHILIP located in the same county and for a time was engaged in mercantile pursuits, but finally adopted the occupation of farming; FRANCIS M. is a practicing physician in Red Oak, Iowa. SAMUEL R. adopted the legal profession as his field of action in life, and entered upon the practice at LaFayette; EMERY R. is now reading law with the view to adopt that profession; and GEORGE W., is studying the science of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In the labors incident to farm life, MR. HIETT is assisted by those of his children who remain at home. Much of this labor, however, is performed by himself, and although 70 years of age, he is still vigorous and healthy, always happiest when actively employed. Although never a politician, he has always felt a lively interest in the success of the Republican party, whose principles he has supported since its organization. He is not identified with any religious denomination, but has done much throughout his life, both by precept and example, to encourage morality among all with whom he has been associated. His wife united with the Methodist Episcopal Church early in life, and has ever been a consistent member of that denomination. Her example has been followed by her children, who are all members of the same church.

    3. Hi Jack, and lists (in case anyone else interested) Your welcome. As to the ages of James McBride and Sarah Edwards, I'm guessing around 1740 or so. I know many have him born 1734...but I don't know where that info was obtained. I do have one dau. Sarah who married James Chenowith b.12/16/1768 so I figure she was probably 1 - 5 years (or more) younger than him. That'd put her birth about 1770. Then if you figure her father James McBride would be probably between 20 and 30 years old and mother Sarah Edwards between 18 - 25 years old. Another dau. Hannah married Jonathan Hiatt b.2/13/1781 would place her birth c1786 (going by same inference on Sarah). This brings up another interesting tidbit regarding James McBrides will: May 20,1817; pr. March 15,1818 wife-- Mary 8ch. : 1- Stephen, 2- James, 3- Thomas, 4- Hannah, 5- Elizabeth, 6- Mary Yeats, 7- Eleanor Lyon, 8- Sarah Chenoweth. Grandchildren: Sarah & James W. Hiatt. It appears children are in reverse order to what is normally thought...youngest to oldest by sex instead of oldest to youngest as is usually assumed! I also wonder if Stephen (thier last child) was born 1790, as per census and tax info, if Sarah Edwards McBride may have died between 1790 - 1795 due to childbirth complications. So, best guess based on 1st dau. Sarah being born c1770... James McBride b. c1740-45 and Sarah Edwards b. c1745-50 Children: (based on will and tax/census info) Sarah b. c1770 Eleanor b. c1772 Marjorie b. c1774 Mary b. c1777 Elizabeth b. c1780 Thomas b. c1782 James Jr. b. c1784 (10/31/1776?) Stephen b. c1790 I have 2 books on the Hampshire Co tax lists one 1782-1799 and the other 1800-1814. Got them from genealogy bookstores online. 3. Hi, Martha! I am interested in the three names of the Hass' surname. I have a misssing gggrandmother named Catherine Hass dau of Peter and Mary Haas/Hass. She was married to Israel Mayberry at Romney on 27 Mar 1827. They had five children named Mary age 21, Thomas age 19, Francis age 16, Peter age 16, Francis age 16 or 17; and Sarah Mayberry. I know absolutely zip on what happened to all the children except my ggrandpa Francis who on the 1850 Census was living in the household of Sarah Taylor, the other siblings were living in the household of their grandparents Peter and Mary Hass. I think I have information that Sarah married James Newton Morehead a physician and enlisted on 25 June 1861 into Company K, 13th Infantry Regt of Virginia. I saw that he was killed at the battle of Chancellorsville/Fredricksburg, Va on 4 May 1863. He is listed on a file at Ancestry.com as having enlisted at Hanging Rock, Va. Where is that located? I assume it's nearby Romney. What happened to Sarah? Were there any children? Etc. What happened to the other children i.e. Mary; Thomas; Peter Mayberry. I have located myggrandpa Francis aka Frank he died @ 1873-77. He lived with his family at Harrisonburg, Cass County, Mo. (to be exact he lived at Grand River Twp. located nearby Harrisonburg). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Frank Mayberry in Muskogee, Ok P.S. I think some of the Mayberry's may have married into the Arnold surname I would like to know for sure.
