Does anyone if the state of Virginia prohibited marriages between whites and mulattos? Thanks Mike
Hi Elaine and All, I had this on the Frederick County, Virginia page: Hopewell Friends Meeting, Route 672, Clearbrook, [Frederick County] VA, (540) 667-9114 The Religion page has more Quaker resources See the USA Directory: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~northing/placenames/usa/ Hope this is helpful. Regards, Flo. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [WVHAMPSH-L] Old Quaker Church Records Resent-Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2000 05:41:37 -0700 Resent-From: WVHAMPSH-L@rootsweb.com Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2000 08:36:35 -0400 From: Elaine D Tomkins <edtom@megsinet.net> Does anyone know how/where to find old Quaker church records for eastern Hampshire Co or western Frederick Co? I'm trying to identify the parents of my gg-grandmother, Hannah Harrison (b.1789, d.1866), who married Jonathan Hiett abt. 1807. If I can possibly find their marriage in the old Quaker records, it just may reveal the names of her parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Elaine Flo. Posted on: Hampshire County, WV Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/WV/Hampshire/1410 Surname: ------------------------- The only Samuel Short on the 1850 Census for Hampshire Co. (posted on the Mineral Co. web site) was 38 years old at the time. Obviously your Samuel Short was from another county. In 1845, he would have been born in VA, not WV. Would suggest you check the 1850 Virginia Census Index for all Short's, then check them out on the related microfilms for a Short family with a Samuel abt. age 5.
Thanks to all who answered my query. Great bunch of people, and very informative. :) Regards, Evelyn

I believe the HOPEWELL FRIENDS MEETING RECORDS for Old Frederick have been printed in book form. Check with Handley Library Archives in Winchester. I doubt the records are available on iter-library loan. Elaine D Tomkins wrote: > Does anyone know how/where to find old Quaker church records for eastern > Hampshire Co or western Frederick Co? Thanks, Mark H. and Barbara J., for those leads which I will definitely follow up on. Elaine
Joan, If Morris & Nancy Scanlon had children born in Hampshire Co. in 1849 and 1851, that would mean that they would have been there for the 1850 Census. They are not, however, listed in the 1850 Hampshire Co. Census which appears on the Mineral Co. web site. You mention their being listed in the 1860 Census in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. What does it give there as the ages and places of birth for the various members of the family? The state of birth of Nancy would be a good place to look for their marriage record. Check 1850 Census records for states between Nancy's state of birth and Indiana for the family, especially taking into consideration the birth state(s) given in 1860 for William & John. Elaine
Sharon, Thanks for the offer. Would please check for William Watkins in Hampshire or Hardy Co. Hazlett (John?) and Abraham Jarrett in Kanawha Co. David Jarrett in Cabell or Kanawha Co. I am new to the list and looking for some advice. I have been working on my husband's gr gr grandparents, Morris and Nancy (Conner) Scanlon. Morris was born in Ireland and came to this country via NY in 1837. I have no idea where he met and married Nancy and did not pick up their trail until I found their daughter's marriage record in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. According to the 1860 census for Tippecanoe County, there were 7 children born to this union: Catherine Ellen, my husband's great grandmother, born February 18, 1835; Mary born about 1838 or 9; James born about 1840-42; Michael, who later became the sheriff of Benton County, Indiana, born about 1844-46; Alexander born about 1847 and died before 1870; William born about 1849 and John born about 1851. The birthdates came from various sources and some guesswork. The records showed Catherine born in Boston (there is no record found), Mary born in Maryland (I haven't checked that yet) and the rest all born in Hampshire County, VA. I've ordered in any available films from my local FHC and checked on line and found zilch! I've also used every variation of spelling for Scanlon I can think of in my search. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Joan
I'd also like to know if one can get access to the original records or just to the published version.
