I'm trying so hard to find info on my GGG-Grandfather Thomas McGuire. I was told that he lived in the area that was in dispute between PA, VA & WV. He moved from there to Ohio around early 1800's. Thanks for replying.

    3. Beth, The High family caught my attention for I have a page #243 from the book Allegheny Passage which mentions Frederick STEINBECK HIGH Sr a 2nd son of John & Elizabeth HAYMAKER HIGH b. Jan 1761 in Germany. He was married to Christina Kail of Cacapon River area. The will of Frederick HIgh was probated 1844 and names his wife Christina and 8 ch. My ggg grandfather who died 1823 in Romney, VA(W) was named Frederick Steinbeck / Stinebeck. I've reached a brick wall with him. This HIgh family has me curious...just why was Frederick Steinbeck HIGH so named? I have a page that includes the names JOhn & Mary Smith HIGH .. have you seen this book? Have you ever seen the Frederick Steinbeck name in your searches? Thanks... 2. Elaine, you're right, it did take me a long time. I'd venture a guess at maybe 6 hours, including writing down the families I was interested in. I checked on that same topic, and ordered 2 films for soundex L200 (Lease) for West Virginia for 1910. And of course there was no Maryland index, so if I decide to do Frederick County, it's back to the drawing board. Thanks again for your help, and keep in touch. Kathy

    3. Please forgive me for the mulitply postings but someone out there has to be related to this bunch. I will attempt to do this again. I don't know how old my James WHITE was when he died in 1846 only that he died in Hampshire County m. to an Elizabeth ROBINSON WHITE b. approx. 1814. I don't know if she was his first, second or third wife. I know Elizabeth White didn't get to keep the property. I know a John ROBINSON and Elizabeth WHITE posted $200 bond for the children. I know John ROBINSON had a son Isaac and is listed on the 1850 census. Children from this marriage on the 1850 Hampshire County Census with Elizabeth WHITE ca. b. 1814 with a William and Lucinda ROBINSON living with her. Agusta M. PENTRUP Martha Gertrude b. 1894 m. Albert WINTROP Isaac died in Clark County, Ohio and is buried in Enon Cemtery, Clark County, Ohio. All his second family were born in Clark County. There is suppose to be some family in Champaign County, Ohio and I was told his name was Joesph. Seems there is a Columbus, Franklin County connection to this family. That may be only because Jesse Melvin WHITE, my grandfather put children in a home there. But he was in Columbus in 1908 at 51 Rich Street also. Jesse left approx.late 1908 and he has been missing 102 years and frankly I am tired of him. I think it is time for him to meet this granddaughter he never knew he had. ;-) I corresponded with the Culture and History in WV and she wondered if my line would go back to Isaac White, the bold mountain man. "Shenandoah Valley Pioneers & Their Descendants" (Cartmell) On the 1840 Census for Hampshire there is a James White Sr. and a James White. Sorry for the long post. Tootsie

    3. Kathy, Just for clarification--There was a 1910 soundex for W.Va., but NOT for Md. You must have spent hours going through the 1910 Census for Allegany Co.--Cumberland alone consists of several hundred pages. Elaine

    1. Re: [WVHAMPSH-L] Springfield Cemetery--Lease
    2. Elaine, Thanks for your reply. I did not realize that there was a soundex index for the 1910 federal census! I will be going to the LDS Family History Library and will check on that. I went through the 1910 census page by page for Allegany County but did not find James T. Lease or wife Mary Jane Lease. You are correct about the reason for James not having a pension - he fought for the south. But if he had lived in Virginia after the war, he probably could have gotten a pension from Virginia. But we checked at the Virginia Library when we were there last week, and they had no pension or disability records on him. They did have the same records that the National Archives has on him -- his service record -- we we have already and which did not yield much information. As for James T. Lease being buried in the Spiker Cemetery, I guess that may be possible. No one in the family remembers any Spikers being related, though. On the 1900 census our Leases were listed in District 7 in Rawlings. For 1910 we found their oldest daughter Arzella & family, but they were not with her. They had another daughter Delphia/Delcia, and I've just found out some of her marriage names, which I could check into on the 1910 soundex index. (I don't know why I keep thinking that there is no index for that year.) But I will check it out soon. I requested death certificates from Hampshire County since someone in the family remembered something about Greenspring, WV. But there were none to be found. Certain years of the Hampshire Co. deaths records were not available (missing) and we think those years may have been when the couple died. (I believe it was 1921, 22, & 23.) If so, they still should show up on the 1910 & 1920 censuses! We also checked the death registers in the Hampshire County Court House last week, and they were not there, and the same years' records were missing from the book. We also checked the Keyser Court House death registers, and did not find them, and ditto for the Maryland State Archives; we checked all the counties plus Baltimore city. I'll have to keep digging, and thanks again for your good suggestions. Kathy Lease in FL
