Lori, I was there about 5 years ago, shortly after John Whitacre had his stroke. The first house you come to is the one he lived in. There is a cemetery close to that house with a few trees around it but, the stones are pretty much trampled and knocked over by the cattle, at that time there was no fence, perhaps it had been taken down. I did not write down any names at that time because it was too cold to try and read them. His son in law took me in his pick up down pass the vacant house below him and showed me a cemetery that is on the hill side and fenced in. I did take a picture, and wrote those names down as they were upright. I am not good at sending any thing but I will try. That is where , Evan T. Hiett 1851 - Feb 8,1925 is buried. John is in a nursing home. Elaine, Thanxs for the info, is there anyway that u may have this Pix. We are planning another trip up there next summer. Is this John Whitacre the present owner?? Dr. Kerns stated that Mr. Whitacre had passed away, But then I heard from a Neihbor near by that he was in a Nursing home. Also this Cowgill is he the owner of the Cowgill family Cemetery?? We are wanting to get permission from the owners about being able to go on there land so we can do our Genealogy. Thanxs, Lori
Lori, Dr. Kerns included a photo of the Evan Hiett Cemetery in his Hiett Family History article which was published in the West Virginia Advocate, 15 Dec 1988. It shows him kneeling in the graveyard with the gravestone of the Rev. James A. Cowgill laying flat on the ground. In the background sits the log home of Evan Hiett, built during the latter part of the 1700's. From the photo, it appears that there is a porch roof on the left side of the view of the house. Assuming that this is the front porch, looking at the house from the front, the graveyard would be off to the right and back just a little farther. In the photo, there appears to be a wire fence around the graveyard. The graveyard is near the house, but not really close. Dr. Kerns apparently visited the graveyard in the fall or early spring when there was no growth of leaves or grass. It did look unkept. From the looks of the bare growth, it would be difficult to see anything during the growing season. It could be that the Whitacres covered the logs of the house with some sort of siding. I would suggest contacting the present owner, John Whitacre. Elaine
We were where Dr. Kerns said the Cemetery was, but we only found 1 stone & we didn't know the name.......The Whitacre's that are taken care of the place said that it was near the house, The grass was about knee high, & saw NO stones, also there was no Log Cabin there it was a regular house "Red" I wonder if we were in the wrong land, there was another house kind of next door, a field was seperating the homes....Were we in the right place?? Lori
Lori, According to Dr. W. Kerns, the Evan Hiett (my 3rd g-grandfather) Cemetery is on Sandy Ridge near Hiett's old log house. The property, as of 1988, was owned and occupied by John Whitacre. Some of the grave markers are made of wood and have survived the years, but are not inscribed--or at least there is no evidence of inscription.
