    1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Cemeterying: Hampshire County 250 Update
    2. R. Wayne McGahuey
    3. Greetings one and all, I'm able to get to this update of this last weekend. Thanks to my co-pilot Izetta we were very successful on finding several cemeteries and taking a few photos. Always remember: If you know of a cemetery that I don't have on my Cemetery page, please let me know, give me directions and I will place it there and this will be my reminder to go to it one day. First we headed to the Mineral/Hampshire Co. border on Rt. 50. I wanted to show Izetta the small cemetery about 100 feet or so into Mineral Co. I know this isn't in Hampshire Co., but it is so close, I decided to add it. If anyone wants it off the site, please let me know. This cemetery I'm calling the SHOEMAKER Family Cemetery. Only 2 people are buried here. We went to the Arnold Cemetery just about 1/2 mile down Rt. 50 on the hillside on the left. This is a big cemetery so I will be a while before I do an inventory of the people there. Most of the morning was full of rain and drizzle. We headed back to Junction, going South on Rt.220 for about 100 yards, we made a left onto Trinity Rd. We went to the Pancake home and talked for a minute to see if John had found anymore information about the Indian Mounds in the area or if there were other cemeteries in the area. He told me that his uncle had told him that the mounds of rocks, years ago had dirt covering them, but has since eroded and washed down the hill. Now for the fun. We found the Forest Hill School, the gate was open and the owner of the property were there loading up their Jeeps to leave. I asked them if I could go to see if we could find the cemetery, they gave us direction. Since they were leaving, I asked if they would leave the gate open and I would lock up when we left. They agreed and I put the truck into 4 wheel drive and we headed down the hill and up the grassy little road. A 4WD was a must. We found the Davy Family Cemetery, but it appears that Izetta ancestors weren't here. She was disappointed. We looked over the hillside for a few minutes couldn't determine if there was an older cemetery in the area or not, so we headed back up the road to leave and head to the next cemetery. And guess what? When we got to the gate, the owners had locked it behind them with 3 or 4 padlocks. BOOZOOs. So here we were locked in to this property with no way out. I walked up and down the road a little to see if there was another way out, and there wasn't, so guess what. The truck was put back into 4 wheel drive and now they have a new entrance to their property. Now that was fun. No cattle, so nothing will be lost except for about 10 feet of barbwire. They weren't nice. Izetta took me to the Elijah High Cemetery, but as you can see by the photo, the rain was on the camera, so the photo isn't all that good. I will take a better photo on another day. She showed me of the Leatherman/Hartman Cemetery on the hillside. I will be going there in the near future when I have a hour or two free. We headed back to Cold Stream Rd. and located the 2 cemeteries and 1 grave site on the John Whitacre Farm. Once again, you must have a 4WD to find these cemeteries. Please look at my map program and the cemetery listing to see the new cemeteries. Any problems with them, view or the names on each website/page, please let me know. I named them, what I thought I should call them. But if you know the real name for each please let me know. Here is a list of the updates: Shoemaker Family Cemetery. Arnold Cemetery Davy Family Cemetery Short Family Cemetery Elijah High Cemetery John Hiett Family Cemetery Joseph Hiett Family Cemetery Lenore Cowgill Gravesite. Have a good night. 2. R. Wayne McGahuey
    3. Greetings one and all, Sorry about not making an update, but Izetta and I went out over last weekend and found some cemeteries. I took photos and names. I wasn't sure what to name the cemeteries, but will place them on the website by calling the family cemetery by the name of the person first buried there. I know the cemeteries may be named other things, but if anyone know the true names please let me know. I have been very busy as the house. Linda goes into the hospital on next monday, so we are trying to get the house in order before she gets her legs operated on. While working around the house it is hard to do my updates. But I will have time after she gets home, and I have that complete week off. I won't be able to get out and cemetery, but I will do some typing. I do have a couple of good stories from this last weekend, and will tell them to all when I do the updates. Have a good week, and I will try and write later this week or weekend. So, please, just because I'm not writing, don't stop writing, I will be reading email and will try to do an update or so when I have time. 3. Diane and Wayne, I checked the site again to make sure I hadn't missed anything. I didn't. This "reading" comes from a few selected graves and is not a full inventory of the cemetery. I know this because my husband's great grandparents are buried there (Hezekiah Shoemaker and Mary Rebecca Hinkle Shoemaker) as well as his mother and uncle who are not listed. This is a large cemetery with graves on both sides of the road. I sure hope someone can find who is in charge of the Old Pine Church, perhaps they have an inventory that would be helpful to us. Thanks for your input and help. Charlene

    3. Martha, I come down from Joseph (The Fort Builder), his son, Joseph's son Samuel, his son David, who married Mary Patty, his son Charles, his son William S(pencer?), Noah, Herbert Sr., Louis, then me. There's a couple more in between in there bothers, sisters, ect. I've been working on a couple problem children Samuel, he disappeared for awhile then reappeared in South Carolina, he was married to a Hannah, no other info, no one in the Newberry Co., is able to help find any thing on him. Then there is William S(pencer), we think his middle name is Spencer, based on a couple of court docs we've got. or being able to find his death date, he died before IL made it law to had a death cert. I've looked all over in the counties around where he died trying to find a probate record or anything and came up ZERO. Also I've been trying to make our way across the "Pond", another big zilch. If you want I can send you what I've got in exchange for Anthony's info. 3. Wayne! To update you on the Ginevan Cemetery. Last burial was Sept 7, 2002. Diana J. Moreland was buried there last Saturday. This is my husband's family cemetery. It is located on part of the Ginevan old home property which was just across the road. My husbands Aunt Evelyn Ginevan is in charge of grave lots. They only a couple of months ago had the cemetery resurveyed. [email protected] Barbara Belford ----- Original Message ----- From: "R. 3. Greetings one and all. I found another cemetery for the list. Today was the Short Family Cemetery. It was very hot here today so I only took photos of it, and thought that I could read the stones from the photos, but that wasn't a very good idea as many of them I could hardly read, even touching the physical stone. So the names you see in the list are very scant. I will make a trip back there in the next few days to write them down on paper and put them on the web. Something told me to go up the road on the way back from Slanesville, and I noticed the wooded area that just looked out of place. So I walked over to it and there was the cemetery. Just down the road from Highview is the small community of Yellow Springs. While in Yellow Springs, I stopped into the little store at the bridge and talked to the "owner" of the store. He told me that the cemetery on the corner that I had called "UNKNOWN" is actually an Indian Graveyard. He didn't know of any of the names or if any of the stones were known to be in existence. This fall, I will try and get out there and see if I can determine how many people are buried there. By the size of it, there can't be anymore then 10 or so. Have a good one and a good night.
