Dear David and John, Thank you so much for informing me that some of the Blue Ridge Mts. are in WV. Worked up a better listing of my four known generations of my McCullough family. In 1980 I published a book "Livingston Lines" and one chapter is on my McCullough family. From the census of 1900 of Falls Co., TX is where some of my data comes from on the syblins of Edward McC. The other data is from the booklet that Edward McC.'s son published on his father. And then some of this is backed up with my research. As a native Texan, I have taken advantage of opportunities to research there upon my return visits and a limited amount of help from some first cousins. I had much help from my mother as she too was very interested in her ancestry. Here is what I have pulled together of the four generations: 1. John McCullough, Sr. immigrated from Ireland. Have not found him listed on any ship. Reported by family to have come when John, Jr. was young. 2. John McCullough Jr. (b.7 Oct 1803-,,Ireland;d.1861) 3. Edward McCullough (b.15 Apr 1834-,Hampshire Co.,VA/WV;d.26 Jun 1902-Mooreville,Falls Co.,TX) sp: Sophia Irvin (b.1834-,Washington Co.,MO;m.5 Nov 1858;d.18 Nov 1861-,Newton Co.,MO) 4. Mary Allie McCullough (b.16 Jun 1861-,Newton,MO;d.10 Jun 1940-Groves,Jefferson,TX) sp: Lawrence L. Livingston (b.28 Jul 1855-Walker Springs,C,AL;m.18 Jan 1880;d.10 Oct 1920-Chilton,Falls,TX) 3. Thomas McCullough (b.May 1836-Maryland) sp: Sarah Rainey (b.Abt 1843-TN;m.1860) 3. Mary McCullough sp: S. L. Irvin 4. Irvin (b.Feb 1865-Ohio) 4. Irvin (b.Nov 1880-Ohio) 3. Margaret McCullough sp: Mears 3. Francis Frank McCullough sp: Melinda 3. Sarah McCullough Jr. sp: H. M. Douglas 3. John McCullough 3. Susan McCullough Jr My McCulloughs did not come in time to tie into your McCulloughs, but they may have been related since is is stated "Edward McCullough was a direct descendant from the McCullough family of historical note in old Virginia before that state was divided--he having been born in Hampshire county later West Virginia." What are your thoughts? Elizabeth
The only land patents/grants I have seen from the area are at the Library of Virginia site under "land records." No guarantee that these were written by anyone other than later scribes. Anyone out there have a Robert B. Lewis, born abt 1812, in their data? Is the B for Baxter? I've got some of his descendants, I need a sibling or a parent. Elizabeth, There were som McCullough's there Hampshire County, WV that were close to Ashby's and Inskeep's. I wish I could draw a picture of these connections but here's a stab on a verbose basis: 1) Thomas Newton Ashby m. Rose Children: Thomas m. Mary McCullough(sister of Hannah Mccullough who married Joseph Inskeep and John McCullough m. Sarah Inskeep) John m. Jane Combs(their daughter Elizabeth married Col. John Peters).....John and Elizabeth Peters grandson John R. Peters m. Frances Simms....their children: 1) Mary Peters who married Martin Ringo(descendent of Albertus and Jane 'STOUTENBURG' Ringo- as were my Peters) 2) Augusta Peters m 1st James Inskeep (grandson of Hannah McCullough and Joseph Inskeep). Another grandson of Joseph and Hannah 'MCCULLOUGH' INSKEEP is John Inskeep VanMeter and lived next to my 4th GGrandfather Lt. Col. John Guthrie in Pike County, Ohio. His father purchased land from Mr. Guthrie. August Peters was born in Woodford County, KY. Robert m. Unknown (Robert's children Winifred Ashby m. James Peters and Nimrod Ashby as killed in 1764 - is this the same Nimrod Ashby killed by Indians with William Foreman??) My Ringo connection goes as follows: Albertus Ringo m. Jane Stoutenburg had Cathrina Ringo m. Elisha Bird had Effie Bird m. Reuben Pownall had Rachel Pownall m. John Peters May 19, 1779 had William D. Peters m. Lydia Guthrie (dau. of John Guthrie) To complicate matters, John Peters mother was a Mary Bird. We speculate that after John's father, James Peters, died in 1750/2, that she remarried to Stephen Ruddell. Stephen Ruddell is found to be in Woodford County, KY and died there about 1800. Now the above John and Sarah 'INSKEEP' McCullough might be a connection for you to check out. If you find anything let me know. Elizabeth, The Blue Ridge Mountains run east of Hampshire County through Virginia and a small portion of West Virginia. It is the Allegheny Mountain Range that runs through the Potomac Highlands in West Virginia, the Allegheny Highlands in West Virginia, Western Maryland, and Pennsylvania and the Laurel Highlands in Pennsylvania. Greetings, I am new to this list. I have been watching your list and now is the time to jump in and tell you of my great grandfather who was born in Hampshire Co. VA/WV. Edward McCullough was born on 15 April 1834. He died 26 June 1902 in Mooreville, Falls Co., TX He must have been proud to have been born there as his place of birth is listed on his tomb stone. I have a picture of it with the data on it. Now the hard part. I have tried to learn more about his parents without much success. His father was John who was born 7 Oct. 1803 in Ireland. He died in 1861. John married Mary Mahoney and she died in 1855. That John was the son of another John and all I know about him is that he too was born in Ireland. I have a chart of the family and in the 1970's I tried contacting all of the descendants I could find of Edward McCullough. His first wife was Sophia Irvin and she was born in 1834 in Washington Co., MO. She died on 18 Nov. 1861. Their only child was my grandmother, Mary Allie McCullough Livingston born 16 June 1861 in Newton Co., MO and died in my home 10 June 1940 in Groves, Jefferson Co., Texas. She was buried in Waco, McLennan Co., TX. She was taken to her paternal grandparents until she was 9. Then her father came after her and took her to Texas to live with him and his second family. Therefore it has been difficult to get much info from the second family. I had planned to go to Ireland next year and unless I can get the McCullough and Irvin families across the ocean, I have decided that there is no point in going. I wanted to go with a group of genealogist who will spend 3 weeks there in July, 2003 doing research. They are from Samford University and I have been with them doing research in London and another year when we researched in London and in Scotland. The McCulloughs came over from Ireland when he was young. He was railed "in the Blue Ridge mountains." (I would not consider Hampshire Co. part of the Blue Ridge mountains. Not in genealogy, but during the Vietnam War, I worked for the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Station - the place ALL military came in to get their physical and then to get orders to go to boot camp. We had identical twins come in, with their birth certificates in an envelope (which they had never looked at - guess Mama gave it to them, but she must not have ever looked at it either). Anyway, their birth certificates were in there, but their last names were spelled differently!! The boys had a fit when we had to enlist them under the last name spellings shown on their "official" document. I always wondered if they ever went to court to get it straightened out! Hi Listers, I have recently been pondering over my many years of research notes, and one thing that struck me early on was how name transitions came about. With my Athey side the men had the odd habit of switching their first and middle names. The first noted for the practice was my great grandfather. He used the name Thomas Brant Athey. When I started locating the family in censuses, I discovered that his given name was David Thomas Athey, after his grandfathers David Ray and Thomas Athey. So why Thomas Brant? I knew that his aunt, Mary Athey had married Levi Brant, but I couldn't imagine a close relationship, because Thomas Athey lived in Hampshire County and Levi and Mary Brant lived in Cumberland, Maryland. But later an elderly aunt told me that she remembered that Thomas had told her that the Brants had taken him in during the Civil War when his father, William N. Athey was away with McNeill's Rangers and times were tough. Afterwards, Thomas dropped the David and was known as Thomas Brant Athey. Mystery solved! My grandfather always used the name Harry Athey, but when I found his birth record in Mineral County, WV he is named as James H. I asked my Uncle Gerald about this and he said that he thought that Harry didn't know his birth name was James, but later I found him in the 1910 and 1920 census and he lists himself as James H. My father always used the name Earl David, but his birth certificate says David Earl, same as mine. So far, I haven't flipped my name. ;-) With my German names, transitions can be explained by Americanization: Wilhelm Heinrich Schneider becomes William Henry Snyder Hardten becomes Harden Koch becomes Cook Burkhardt becomes Burkett Muller becomes Miller Fuchs becomes Fox What is the point of this posting? Never accept anything as fact until you have sufficient documentation to assure you that it is a fact. Anybody else have any interesting names transitions?

I loved your piece on names! I have lots of stories on this subject, but first, the early emigrant German Catholics tended to name all their kids the same first name (a saint's name) and different middle names, which were the ones the kids were called. By tradition, the Protestant Germans tended to follow this same pattern, though the first name wasn't necessarily a saint's. So I have German ancestors whose names appear in some records by the middle name and in others by the first name and in some by both given names! Other Catholics appear to have done this too. I have one family with seven daughters, all named Mary something, but none known as Mary. One woman I was researching was named Margaret Amanda. In one census, she was Margaret, in the next she was Amanda, and in the rest she was Margaret A. (Her husband called her Margie), Her daughter was named Adam Margaret (for her father Adam who died in the Civil War a few days before her birth). In one census the child was listed as Adam M., which was confusing since she was also listed as a female, but after that she was listed as Margaret A. Then there was Erasmus, who became Charley, who became Charles E., all whom were one Charles Erasmus, whom some called "Raz.". Then there was his daughter, Frances, who didn't like her middle name, so she simply changed it from Isabel to Elizabeth, and she used that from then on. And I am constantly finding records that refer to the same man first by his middle name, then a year or two later by his first name, back and forth, back and forth, and sometimes by only the two initials for his given name. And we had a relative who has had three different last names, depending on his mother's current husband. When he got mad at his last stepfather, he took the previous one's surname for his own. Egads! I could go on all day... I guess the point is that you need more than one source (preferably three) to be fairly certain of much of anything when it comes to names, unless you have a first-hand account that you can absolutely believe. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
