    3. I wonder if Hampshire Co. has any sort of Cemetery Preservation Project in the works? Such an organization could encourage and assist land owners in the preservation of these old cemeteries and support legislation to protect them. 3. Wayne, You do go above and beyond! It's such a shame that people who have these old cemeteries on their property don't feel a sense of responsibility to do a little something to preserve them. They are, after all, temporary caretakers of the land and its history, and the cemeteries are a very important part of local history. Apparently from the dates, the people buried in the Kale Cemetery were among the first settlers in eastern Hampshire Co., and it's appalling that the current owners have so little regard as to let the cattle trample the cemetery into oblivion. Unfortunately, this is the case with several other historical cemeteries in the county. A lot of credit goes to those land owners who take steps to preserve the old cemeteries they discover on their land. It would be nice if on your web site, recognition be given to current land owners who make an effort to preserve the old cemeteries on their property. Perhaps under each of those cemetery listings, the land owner's name could be given, mentioning that they have made an effort to preserve the cemetery (by putting a fence around it, or whatever). Just a thought. Elaine "R. Wayne McGahuey" wrote: > ...Today I went out and found one of the cemeteries in Capon Bridge. Pretty > > run down, and trampled by cattle. 3. Greetings one and all. Today I went out and found one of the cemeteries in Capon Bridge. Pretty run down, and trampled by cattle. In the next few years this cemetery will only be a memory and visable only on the website. It needs a fence or something around it to protect it. Many of the stones are already broken or knocked down. I stepped in a lot of cow pies today. Yuk. This cemetery was the KALE Family Cemetery. http://members.citynet.net/rwayne/hampco/kale.htm I have had this cemetery on the site for some time, but now I have a photo and can show you where it it located. Have a good night. Wayne of Capon Bridge. 1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Cemeterying: McCauley Hampshire County 250 Update
    2. R. Wayne McGahuey
    3. Izetta. I did a little research on the McCauley Family Cemetery and the Homestead this past weekend, and here is what I came up with. I talked with Gary Riggleman who lives just down Timber Mountain Road from Route 50. His wifes mother is Mary Smith, the owner of the Apple stand at Looms, at the top of the hill on 50. Mary has lived around there for many years, and after talking with her and Gary I know know where the old McCauley Homestead is, and where another McCauley Homestead was. As well as information on the McCauley Family Cemetery. First, for the homestead. There appears to be two. One is/was in Looms. Behind the fruit stand (according to Gary). Nothing is left of the house at all. He said that there was no double chimney on this house, but if I remember right where was a rock foundation that was picked up and moved and used for other purposes years ago. He also talked of the house near the Kline Cemetery. On the hill when I was being stared down my the bulls and having to shooo the calf off the graves without the mommy cow eating me, there was a house next to the cemetery. Today you can still see the foundation and or rock holes. I will get back with Gary a little more about the names of the people that lived here, but I thought he said McCauley. Next for the McCauley Family Cemetery. There is none in the area, and that was the common consensus of everyone that was related to the McCauley name around here. Many of the McCauley's were buried at the United Methodist Church on Rt.50 at Looms. Now back to the old McCauley Homestead. You know where John Whitaker lived? The second house we came to with the Even Hiatt Cemetery. That was the old McCauley Homestead. There is two chimneys there, but there is a house in the middle of them. I have looked at aero maps, but there is no other homestead in the area. How is that? Ask your question, and I will get answers for you. 2. R. Wayne McGahuey
    3. Greetings one and all, I will be making 3 updates tonight. I went out to Green Springs today with Stevie-Lee, my grand daughter. She just doesn't have the concept of what a cemetery is yet. She watches too much TV, asking me who killed all these people. I had to explain to her that people died of different causes other then being killed. Like age, illness and other things. The next cemetery, she asked the same question, who killed these people, and how far are they buried under us. I took a while to explain, but it appeared to go in one year and out the other. Anyway, my first update is the addition of the Arnold Family Cemetery. It took me almost 1 or so to find this one, as it was located behind a concrete wall, in the middle of a bunch of stickers. You should see my scratches. http://members.citynet.net/rwayne/hampco/arnold1.htm I met a lot of nice people looking for this cemetery, made a few friends today. Stevie also saw her first skinned raccoon. So our next cemetery we headed to was the McLaughlin Cemetery. See my next messages. 1. [WVHAMPSH-L] Cemeterying: EUBULUS Hampshire Co. 250 Cemetery Project
    2. R. Wayne McGahuey
    3. Greetings one and all. Today I made a trip to one of the "Back-40" cemeteries. This one was located just in the Hampshire Co. line near Paw Paw. There were several different families buried there, and it didn't appear to be a family plot as it was behind an old church out in the woods. http://members.citynet.net/rwayne/hampco/eubulus.htm There was a fence at one time around these markers, but most of it has fallen down by time. There was quite a bit of space dedicated for this cemetery as by the boundary of the fence, but I guess because of the location, not too many people wished to be buried here. I did was the fenced in area to make sure there wasn't anymore markers, and I couldn't find any. This Sunday, I will be going with my granddaughter to Green Springs and Springfield. In Green Springs each Halloween the make of one of the older houses as the "Haunted House". One the grounds of this house there is a cemetery if I remember right. I don't think it was a fake one for the "Haunted House", but Stevie-Lee and I will find out on Sunday. Have a night. We will be taking the kids out to see "Santa Clause II" tonight. Tomorrow I have an all day meeting in Petersburg dealing with the local Ruritan, but I may send out a note before I go to bed on Saturday. Later. 3. Hello Lists Thank you for all the responses. Bill Good RE "I have a lookup request in the following article by Charles Morrison entitled "Early Fairfax Land Grants and Leases Along the South Branch of the Potomac," in West Virginia History, V37 (Oct 1976), pp. 1-22." I received the following from Jim Funkhouser in regards to my above query. Morrison, "Early Fairfax Grants...," p. 4 "The surveyor's courses and distances make it possible to draw with remarkable certainty the boundaries..." [Northern Neck Grants O, 72f; Hampshire County Deed Book 2, 124f; Hardy County Deed Book A, 12; ] These are the only references to deed and grant book with two exceptions. Because of the "f." (following pages) I assume that Morrison used a number of deeds and grants in vol. 2 of the Hampshire Deeds and in vol. O of the Northern Neck Grants. The other two deed references: Frederick Co. Deeds 1, p.310 which documents the presence of Peter Thorn and Henry Laucisucs (or Lanciscus) in the South Branch and South Fork valleys by 1744, metioned in Hume's survey of the Frederick-Augusta county line; and Frederick Co. Deeds 13, p. 248 in which Fairfax asserted his claim to Manor lands occupied without a lease and offered to lease. Pp 8-11 list deeds and leases from the Northern Neck books; pp. 12-19 list early residents and lessees drawn from the rent lists.
