    3. Elaine, I have thought of recognizing the people that clean up and work on the cemeteries on their property, I have only found one or two that any care has been taken. So I will remember them, mainly the family cemeteries and acknowledge the families. Usually the larger ones they have a grounds keeper. 2. Jane, Thank you for this information. I know that my greatgrandfather used to work on this orchard also. His name was Ernest McBride. Edward Miller had a sister named Susan Rebekah. She was Ernest's mother, and I know that she lived in Slanesville. I also know that Edward Miller was living in Hampshire County in 1907. If I find anything more that may connect with the information that you gave me, I will get back with you and see if it rings any bells. Thank you again, Linda

    3. Greetings one and all, The other day, I went to a few cemeteries and listed them on the website, but I forgot to mention two others that I caught wind of that aren't on any maps yet. The first is at the far end (north) of Timber Ridge (Rt.50/26). Right before leaving the county, and on the right side of the road is both Frederick County and what I was told an old Indian gravesite. The man living at the end of the county on this road, mentioned to me that he was told many years ago, when they built the road, they built it around the graves, and when they cleared fields they left the trees between the field and the road, because of the graves. There is no one to doubt the claim, so I will do some research to find out who knows what. I will walk the property to see what I can find, mounds, holes or whatever. The next cemetery is one that I was told about in Springfield. This one being an old slave cemetery. I was old by a kid that his dad use to take him by an "old slave cemetery" when they went into the woods to hunt. I will find out more. 3. Greetings one and all. I have written a few people here in the county that I feel have some knowledge of the Hampshire County Historical Society to see if there is a problem with people joining the HCHS or is there just a problem or no committee or no one to follow up the membership of new members. Most of the people that work with the HCHS are by what I see, people that meet once a month or so, some work at the library, many retired and many are members that do mainly their own research. The Hampshire County 250 meets one every other month. And I believe they just met this last week. So it will be some time before they meet again. I don't offically work with the HCHS, but when I go door to door looking for cemetery, I mention the HCHS and the cemetery project, and people open up a little. They are setting up a demonstration on the Hampshire County Cemetery Project on December 14th from 10 to Noon at the Capon Bridge Library (a Saturday). So anyone wanting to see the project and what I have been doing, please stop by, but I don't have a clue what I'm going to be showing or even let alone talking about for 2 hours. I guess it is just a 2 hour plan. I will show the website, show some of the local cemeteries, get people involved, and I figure most of the people that actually do show up will be interested and maybe I can get some people in inventory some of the larger cemeteries. The Fairview Cemetery Committee is attempting to plat the present cemetery. I have been trying to contact the committee, but there has been no response yet. I'm including this cemetery as there are many Hampshire Co. individuals buried there. Write when you can. 3. Linda, I knew an Edward Miller who owned Romney Orchards, but not sure he came to the area from PA or in the time frame that you speak of. Also the Edward Miller who owned Romney Orchards lived in Romney on Woodland Way since the 1940's at least and his wife was Mary Browning Keller. Some of his children still live in Hampshire Co. 2. I am in no way critizing Wayne as he goes far beyond what is expected. I just suggested that maybe the Hampshire County Historical Society could be of some help as in other areas Historical Societies really work on the cemeteries. Good luck if you can get the Society to respond to your inquiries and even cash checks that have been sent to them Anna C. Lane

    3. I learned long ago to not to knock someone or a job they were doing until you "walked in their shoes." Thousands of our ancestors came though Hampshire County and went on west or southwest including some of mine. Some of our ancestors descendants stayed in Hampshire County. Hampshire County is rich in history and has many cemeteries. It is a sparsely settled county of less than 20,000 and whom about 20% are living at the poverty level. Most of us would like the cemeteries there maintained to a minimal level. Wayne's research has shown many are located on private land. Descendants won't volunteer send money for fences, monument repairs or clearing the land once a year of ancestors they knew only by name. Several years ago I found my wife's ancestors cemetery in rural Garrett Co., MD, once a church graveyard and now in the middle of a cornfield, grown up in brush and weeds. I contacted the relatives back there and offered to donate a large sum if they would could take on a project of getting it cleaned up and a fence put around it. They were actually insulted that I asked. Wayne has been trying to visit, take pictures and inventory these cemeteries for several months. He has had very few to volunteer to inventory any of them. Taking an inventory and photographing a cemetery takes a lot of time. I went out to inventory a cemetery, once, with another party. Within minutes they complained of the gnats. Within a few more minutes they were gone. We have to congratulate Wayne for taking 5 or 6 days a week and driving all over the county to inventory our ancestors. You see, Wayne doesn't know of any of his ancestors buried there. He found a project that helps another group and is appreciated. Would you be willing to take one day while on vacation and inventory a cemetery in Hampshire County or any adjoining county there? ...or to clean one up? ...or donate to the Hampshire County Historical Society for the purpose of cleaning up a specific cemetery? If so, write to Wayne online or the Hampshire County Historical Society, Post Office Box 549, Augusta, WV 26704. Enclose a stamped self address envelope with you letter. Bill Pyles Titusville, FL

    3. Yes, it's too bad that this so-called "Historical Society" doesn't do what other historical societies do. There is so much history to be "mined" in this county. It would be so nice if there were someone there who was truly interested in historical preservation who would take this group in hand, shake it out of its social doldrums and historical apathy, and get it on the right track--if that is at all possible. 3. Greetings one and all. I will be going out of town for the weekend, but I did manage to get some cemeterying down today. I went to 3 cemeteries. The first was stopping by the Fairview Lutheran Church and Cemetery to take a photo. I know that it is out of the county but there are plenty of people buried there from Hampshire Co. http://members.citynet.net/rwayne/hampco/fairview.htm Then next was the unknown Child gravesite. http://members.citynet.net/rwayne/hampco/child.htm and the final one was the Riley Cemetery. George Riley was the only grave marker that can be read. The rest of the stones are unmarked stones. http://members.citynet.net/rwayne/hampco/riley.htm I will place all these sites on the maps when I get back from the weekend out. We are going to DC for a night. Wayne of Capon Bridge Hampshire Co. website: http://members.citynet.net/rwayne/hampco/index.htm My Homepage website: http://members.citynet.net/rwayne/index.htm
