Over 30 authentic Greenbrier County 1938 160th Anniversary and 1978 County 200th Anniversary Commemorative medals have been donated to the Greenbrier Historical Society by Mr. Jack Winkler, Society member and past Society President. Mr. Winkler, who was chairman of the Greenbrier County 200th Anniversary Coin Committee, donated the coins to be sold as a fundraiser for the Society's North House Museum. The original dyes from which the coins were minted were destroyed after the coins were made in both 1938 and 1978, with very few of the coins available today. The obverse of the 1938 and 1978 medals shows Fort Donnally which withstood a determined Indian attack and siege in 1778. Flanking the fort are General Andrew Lewis, for whom Lewisburg was named, and Colonel John Stuart, first Clerk of the County Court and pioneer settler of Greenbrier County. The reverse of both medals shows the area of Greenbrier County when it was formed, comprising 17 counties in West Virginia and extending to the Ohio River. Both medals also show the Spring House at The Greenbrier Hotel. The 1938 medal also shows Greenbrier College for Women (now Greenbrier Community College) and the 1978 shows the first County Clerk's office building. The 1938 medal was only available in bronze. The 1978 medal was available in bronze, pewter and silver. The coins will be available for purchase beginning April 15, 1999 and are to be sold on a first come, first served basis. Prices for the coins are as follows: 1938 Bronze $25, 1978 Bronze $20, 1978 Pewter $30, and 1978 Silver $100. For more information, contact the North House Museum at (304) 645-3398.
