I asked a similar question this week, following up information in Civil War pension applications, and discovered a wonderful new series by Time-Life Books: "Voice of the Civil War." It has an account of the battles, good maps, reports from generals etc, and letters from ordinary soldiers. Check your local library to see if they have it. Sometimes you have to do a bit of investigation before you can use it: 1) You need to know which campaign your battle was in (usually you can figure that out from a general civil war book or perhaps an encyclopedia article). The series is divided into books by the campaign. 2) You need to know what else the battle was called. I was looking for Gaines' Mill, which was a major battle but generally called by other names: Old Cold Harbor and Chickahominy. 3) If you don't know what else the battle was called, you can find it by the date and then look at the battle maps.
