Hi Alice and list, You are right that name is kind of like "The boy named Sue". I can see the problem you are having with the information which I found in the book, "Greenbrier Co./Family Heritage 1997". There are several John McClungs mentioned in Burr information, as well as several Rebecca's. [p. 39] Hopefully, I can clarify this for you. For those who are unfamiliar with the McClung family, they seemed to name all of their early men with distinguishing aka's. That served to help tell one man apart from the other, since they consistantly named their families with the same names over and over again. I have studied these Greenbrier McClungs enough to realize that they were such a manly bunch, that giving the name of Katy [assumably a feminine type name] would not cause anyone to raise an eyebrow. Perhaps one of the McClungs has more information on why this particular John was called Katy John. I can indeed verify that the parent of Mary Jane McClung Fulwider was "Katy" John McClung. That information is found in the Greenbrier Heritage 1997 book, that I have been studying. It is also located in the McClung book by Rev. William McClung. I have learned this about Katy John McClung. His father was William McClung [Long Billie]. The dates in the McClung book on p. 183 are a little screwy, so won't even mention them. He died before he was born, if that helps any. :-) He married Margaret Bollar first and then Martha McMillion. Margaret Bollar was the mother of Katy John McClung. William's brother was Alexander McClung and Rebecca Cavendish. Alexander's aka was Stumpy Alex/Bake Alex. Rebecca was related to Lord Cavendish that I have reported on previously. A comment in the McClung book, indicates that Alexander sold several slaves and drank their worth in alcohol. They had six children. Dates and information on this part of the family is available in the McClung book. [perhaps the Greenbrier Book]. [I have not fully studied the McClung info in the Greenbrier book. There is alot of it.] The information about Katy John marrying Rebecca Burr is found on p. 72 of the Greenbrier Book. It is also found on pg. 39, but John McClung is not listed as Katy John on that page. He is also listed as Katy on p. 185 of the McClung book. On pg 72, it tells about the McClung trait for producing many sons. I have reported on one son, James who died serving the Confederate States of Amer. in 1862. A son was also born before that son. Six daughters followed James. Rebecca died in 1882 and John married her niece Eliza Burr and had three more daughters. Katy John d. in 1900. If anyone would like scanned copies of p. 72 and 73 as attachments, let me know and I can send them by email. There is alot of Burr information on those pages. I scan them and save them by win95 word docs. I also see a biography of John McClung who married Rebecca Burr on p. 18 of vol 30 of the McClung Family Assoc. Journal 1995. It gives the information that Rebecca Burr was the dau. of Aaron and Rebecca Collins Burr. Aaron was b. in Conn.about 1776. His wife was b. in Hampshire Co.[then VA]. Other dates are available for Rebecca's family. There is more info about John and Rebecca's children and so on in this article. I could scan that also for anyone who is interested. There is also info about John's grandfather and his ancestry. The mother of William McClung was of unknown parentage, found deserted in the fort in her infancy, and adopted and raised by Co. Dickenson. Those McClungs are an interesting bunch! The McClung book pretty much verifys the information found in the Greenbrier book. Katy John McClung b. 1809 d. 1900 marrried Rebecca Burr 1833. She was b. 1807 and was the dau. of Aaron Burr,Sr. She died in 1882. McClung book says there were 8 children. Katy John McClung married second Eliza S.R. Burr. She was dau. of Aaron Burr Jr. They married in 1882 Williamsburg, WVA. They had 3 children. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ More McClung/Burr marriages as found in the McClung Book, by Rev. William McClung 1904 Nancy Ann Eliza McClung b. 1848 [twin of Minerva McClung] m. Rev. James Allen Burr 1866. He was b. 1840, d. 1889. If more info is desired on the line which relates to this marriage, I will be happy to try to provide that, as time permits. Please be sure to mention where the info was found and pg, if I have given it in the message. Saves me time and speeds up the response time. :-) James Coggin McClung b. 1817 d. 1875 m. Lucinda Burr 1840. She was b. 1814 d. 1886. They had five children, which are listed. Jennie McClung m. George A. Burr Mt. Lookout, WVA. There is no other info on this couple in the book. Nancy McClung m. John Burr. Williamsburg, WVA. No other info, except ancestors of Nancy is in the book. This Nancy is the sister of Katy John McClung. P.S. I also belong to the McClung list. If anyone wants information on joining that, or the Greenbrier List, feel free to contact me about that. Please feel free to add, or request clarification of this information. Happy Hunting.
