1. How were the personal property taxes actually collected in Virginia Counties 1787 - 1850? 2. Did the tax man physically collect at the property owner's home, or, were the taxes sometimes (or, always) paid in the tax man's office? 3. What adult males would not be on those lists? 4. What would constitute grounds for exemption from tax? Would something like extreme old age (90+) be grounds? Would it take a special authorization and, if so, from whom?
